The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery leave us feeling enraged, heartbroken, and energized. We stand in complete solidarity with those protesting the gross misjustice, oppression, and continued outright murder of black people across this country; a despicably long and brutal history that spans far beyond recent events but one which will surely continue without a dramatic reckoning of our national soul. We hope for the safety of those out there demonst...rating and pray for peace while acknowledging its inherent impossibility without requisite justice for those whose voices continue to be silenced, whose very breath is not guaranteed. We wish to join our voice and amplify the call for broad scale change, reform, and a comprehensive reimagining of the justice system, the way we police, and the systemic racism poisoning the wells of our mutual Freedom. Now is the time for action, complacency is complicity and simply voicing solidarity isn’t enough. As a small business and proud member of this strong and beautiful Oakland community, we commit ourselves to support major reform for the system that perpetuates the rampant injustice plaguing our country in every way we can. Follow organizations like @peoplesbreakfastoakland and @100blackmenofthebayarea to educate yourself and donate to @souleygold @grassrootslaw to support their work. Amplify Black voices in your community. This week’s cocktail is called Bijou, named for its 3 colors: gin for diamond, vermouth for ruby and chartreuse for emerald. Try it at home! 2oz Dry Gin 3/4oz Sweet Vermouth (we like Cocchi di Torino or Mancino Rosso) 1/2oz Green Chartreuse ... 2 dashes Orange Bitters Stir and serve up or on the rocks with an expressed lemon twist. Viola!

We love a good Mint Julep and we’re not the only ones. Theodore Roosevelt used to make them using the mint leaves from the White House’s garden. To make your own: 2oz Mint-infused bourbon 1/4oz rich simple syrup (2:1 sugar to water) ... Fill to overflowing (sno cone style) with crushed ice & garnish with fresh, expressed mint sprig. Add a squeeze of lemon (pre-I’ve) for a sorta bastardized (improved) whisky smash. Infusion: 2:1 bourbon to fresh mint by volume in a sealed container for 3-4 hours. Strain and voila! Easily made in large batches for sharing at 6 foot intervals #themiranda #oakland #mintjulep #stillathome #week6

Whatever you’re celebrating this weekend...here’s a low ABV, day sipper for you to try. Sherry Cobbler Muddled orange & lemon wheels... 3oz Oloroso Sherry (we like Lustau) 1/4oz simple syrup Dash orange bitters Shake the bejeezus out of it and roughly strain into a large parfait glass. Try brightening your weekend with The Jungle Bird 2oz of Black Strap Rum (we recommend Cruzan), 3/4oz of Campari, 1.5oz pineapple juice, 1/2 oz lime and 1/2oz Petite Canne rich simple syrup. Shake hard and strain. Garnish with a heavy hand and light heart (think umbrellas, pineapple leaves, whatever you have on hand). Cheers!
