Spotlight | Afro-surrealist Artist David Alabo on rendering his piece ‘Divine Opulence’ for ‘Lovecraft Country: Sanctum’ In the ideation of 'Lovecraft Country: Sanctum', The Mill Experience creative team toyed with various methods of collaborating with current Afrofuturist artists - from pondering a live sculpt in VR, and eventually landing on a vision to recreate their artwork as a VR experience. We came across David Alabo's surrealist pieces which are stunning and naturally... entice viewers to want to be a part of his worlds. David presented 'Divine Opulence', a breathtaking desert scene in which a skull and a pair of praying hands rose up from glittering sands to tower over us. We crafted an immersive film experience for the launch of Sony’s groundbreaking Spatial Reality Display. A leap forward in 3D display technology, this innovative tool allows artists, architects, product designers, and creators the freedom to see their creation in three dimensions as they craft it. To demonstrate this technology, The Mill was tasked with creating a complex and captivating CG scene, powered by Unity’s game engine technology, that showcases the stunning power an...d visual fidelity of this unique new tool. Creative Director, Andrew Proctor, created an engaging scene featuring a futuristic metropolis and flying vehicle for the display. Andrew comments We wanted to show how far creators could take this technology and explore the limits of Sony’s Spatial Reality Display monitor. Working with Unity, we could craft a seamless scene for the audience to explore. The Sony Spatial Reality Display monitor is a huge leap forward for our industry. I'm excited to see how we can utilize the technology to expand our creative potential even further! 60 Seconds with Mill Director Gundeep Anand on directing ‘Blood is Thicker’ for Gift of Life Marrow Registry We launched short film ‘Blood is Thicker’ starring rapper and lyricist Terrell ‘Trizzy’ Myles in conjunction with The Lucy Collective and nonprofit organization Gift of Life Marrow Registry in order to encourage others to join the fight against blood cancer and save Black lives. We caught up with Gundeep on the project:... "As soon as I spoke to the artist and the client, it was clear how much they cared about this campaign and especially what it meant for the artist himself. A true reflection of passion and care must come across the film and that’s what we managed to do. I believe not making this authentic and any fabrication of this film would be a disservice to the project and it won’t have the same impact as its having now." Quiet Storm Founder Trevor Robinson OBE discusses tackling Racism through ‘Create Not Hate’ initiative We caught up with Quiet Storm Creative Director and Founder Trevor Robinson OBE to discuss the Create Not Hate initiative and why it is so important for the advertising industry to bring in more diverse talent. 'This time we’ve had some really great media coverage and a lot more people got involved positively. The films have been aired on Channel 4, national newspapers have ...covered it and there has been a lot more focus on the kids this time around. It also doesn’t seem to be dying off with more work coming out now. It feels like Create Not Hate hasn’t lost momentum people are still talking about it. I’ve seen a lot of initiatives in the ad industry run out of steam and hopefully this won’t happen with Create Not Hate. Our industry needs to have a pipeline of diverse talent.' How Mill Director Jamie Lancaster used lockdown to create a series of hilarious Evel Knievel shorts While other people were watching box sets during lock-down, I was having fun blow-torching piano wire to shove up a fluffy chicken "All of these have been shot on my iPhone using the FilmicPro app. It’s amazing. It was perfect to shoot on because I needed a camera & lens which could get right up close to Evel, so the viewer felt that we’re with him. The problem is that he’...s REALLY small (his head’s about the size of my thumbnail), so to get that close there was no way I was going to do it with a Canon 5D. Plus as I’m shooting at such a miniature scale the slightest movement is amplified, especially when watched at HD size. Even with a gimbal or monopod/tripod, there can still be loads of shake and vibrations." Check out the shorts & learn more about Jamie's project here: https://hubs.li/H0yt1SM0
