In my twenties, I had a side hustle as an artist’s model. The added benefit was free life drawing classes. I was shy, but since I couldn’t afford art classes otherwise, I took a deep breath and bared all. And, amazingly, I grew used to being naked in a room full of (clothed) strangers. My body was simply an object, like a vase of flowers or a bowl of fruit. This is different from being objectified. I was completely me, yet I had the sense of wearing my body like a favorite ...dress. During that time, I also saw a lot of other naked bodies. Between my nudity and theirs, a kind of magic happened--I grew more comfortable in my skin whether I was clothed or not. This is a gift I wish I could give to everyone. If your main exposure to naked bodies is mainstream media and porn, you truly ain’t seen nothing yet. Those images are reductive. They’re also often unreal thanks to filters, Photoshop, and other digital manipulations (you’ve seen how scary deepfake is, right?) Even when you’re aware of that voodoo, it’s hard not to fall victim to its spell. Seeing is believing--and what you see in your mirror can’t compare. So you choose to either hide or transform your perceived flaws with clothing. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this. Creating an idealized form--or just expressing yourself with your style--is a pleasure. Unfortunately this can also lead you to fear what your body actually looks like without a little lift here and a little constriction there. When you consistently cover something up, you may start believing there’s something shameful about it. But looked at objectively--as I did when I drew nude models--what’s really wrong with softness, laxity, wrinkles, cellulite, and scars? These are simply traits that you were born with or that show the passage of time and experience. They help make you unique. Indeed, you do not need to be flawless to enjoy your body. As Rupaul famously says, Stop trying to fit in when you were born to stand out.
