In accordance with Governor Newsom’s new stay-at-home orders, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens will be temporarily closed beginning Monday, December 7. Per the State’s order, we will be closed for at least 3 weeks or until the mandate is lifted. While we are sad to be closing our doors again, we know that it is for the greater health of our staff, guests, and community, said Allen Monroe, President/CEO of The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. As always, we remain steadfast i...n our commitment to providing the highest level of care to the 500 animals who call The Living Desert home. Our excellent animal care and veterinary team will continue to remain onsite during our temporary closure. If you have tickets to visit to the zoo during this temporary closure, either during daytime hours or for WildLights, we will be reaching out via email in the coming days with ways to reschedule your current reservation, receive a refund or donate your unused tickets back to the Zoo. Members will have the option to extend their memberships or donate that amount of time back to the Zoo. For more information, visit LivingDesert.org/Health.

The Living Desert is devastated to share that our newest wallaby joey has passed away. When the animal care team arrived for their morning rounds on Sunday, the rock-wallaby joey was found deceased in its habitat. Everyone is just devastated, said RoxAnna Breitigan, Director of Animal Care at The Living Desert. The joey immediately won over our hearts and became a symbol of hope during this very challenging year. His sudden and unexpected passing has been very difficult.... At this time, we don’t know how or why the joey died, but we will be completing a full necropsy to try and get some answers, said Dr. Andrea Goodnight, Head Veterinarian at The Living Desert. When you care for over 500 animals, there are some really great days, but also a few very difficult ones. This has been one of the difficult days. Our hearts are broken over the loss of this sweet joey. His mother, Prissy, is doing well and will be closely monitored over the coming weeks. We thank you, our tremendous community, for your support.
