I got to put my new metalworking skills to use helping my leather business yesterday. We were going to make a large batch of key fobs so I decided to try and make a cut out die. It’s not as pretty as ones that I have bought before but it’s cutting out pieces great and only took about an hour of my time so YAY! My first try at deep button tufted upholstery. I have a job coming up to reupholster the bench seats for a 1903 horseless carriage. Trouble is it is done in this style upholstery and I had never tried it before. It’s for a long time customer who insisted he was confident I could pull it off. So... time to learn. I spent last night watching YouTube videos on the subject and today, after closing time at the shop, got to work on putting that new knowledge into action. This was j...ust a practice piece but I should be able to make it into a nice footstool at some point in the future. And I am really happy with how it turned out. Just finished up this piece tonight and I had to share it. It’s a tsuba shaped pendant made from nickel and copper mokume gane with silver inlayed flowers. About 1.75 diameter. This was one of those pieces that reminds me why I love doing what I do. I had the idea for it a few days ago, tried a practice piece last night and tonight just decided to go for it, despite having never tried inlaying anything before. And I’ll be damned if everything didn’t go exactly as I hoped it... would. Not one problem or hiccup the whole way through. So so so happy with it in every way. Well F#<& !!! This, it seams is what happens when you are 90% finished with a knife, notice a slight bend in it that you somehow missed all along, and try to gently tap it a bit to see it it can be made a little better. 6-8 hours lost. Damn..... ah well. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Best to get it out of the way and learn from it. #finnsleathershop

Got a new knife in the works this evening at the home forge. This one is going to be for sale at the shop when it’s done. With a custom leather sheath of corse. I actually got a shipment of 6 pieces of knife steel, which I am hoping to turn into several knives to sell at the shop. It’s always been a dream of mine to be able to make and sell my own knives with custom sheaths. Feels pretty good to finally see it happening. I’ll keep posting pictures as this big project progresses.
