I am so incredibly proud of this collaboration with @chag_lowry. I met Chag at Indigenous Comic Con and had some wonderful conversations rooted in California Na...tive issues. Fast forward to this year, where he approached me to co-write and illustrate a book centered on California women and basketry, narrated from the perspectives of those baskets. This is something I feel my work has been edging towards, as my personal life has been learning about fibers and weaving and the history of one of our oldest and highest forms of art. These baskets were once made to stay with us daily, they were relatives for much longer than they were fancy trinkets for tourists to buy and a means for us to be able to sustain our families during times when our traditoonal ways of life were uprooted and cast aside to die. There are so many stories inside these baskets; Words in each stitch: memories, days, years, infinite. And in todays present time, many of us face very complicated relationships with these relatives, our woven kin. From relationships with the land, to ways to connect, to seeing the real effects of environmental damage to our tradtional materials: so many thoughts are packed into so few pages here. I hope this book opens up so many dialogues about our relationships with our baskets. Tremendous thank you to Chag Lowry (whose idea this was), @hafflowry for writing the accompany curriculm guide, to @ciba.baskets for their endorsement of such a project, @blue_lake_rancheria for believing and supporting this work as well as Kaitlin Reed, @calvitre and Rose Soza for their words of encouragment.
