I love planning and hosting the shows with soloists and the Randy Van Horne Singers. The group is fun and we all enjoy singing so much. Our upcoming Valentine's Day show is no exception. The Randy Van Horne Singers will be joining with Veterans and local dignitaries to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the signing of the armistice ending WWI. What a gas! Last evening during our show at Viva, the 584 Big Band hosted the ASMAC, or American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers. So, the composers and arrangers brought their music for the band to play. It was amazing evening. So cool to watch them conduct their musical pieces. Of course, the 584 band read the charts beautifully! In the front room was Steve Johnson's Jazz Legacy. Great to go between both rooms for a delightful evening. Choosing songs to sing is a science and an art. There's the practical side, the key it's in, the quality of the melody and the tempo. Does the song have audience appeal, or do you just love it? Even if these things work, it's like trying-on a pair of shoes, it needs to "fit." The lyrics have to be meaningful so you can personalize them. The melody should complement your interpretation of the song. Some songs take time, practice and dedication to coax into meaning. If you love singing keep doing it, it will just get better!
