Earlier today, the Sign’s security and video monitoring system recorded an attempt to vandalize the Sign. Through the efforts of LAPD’s Hollywood Division and the Park Rangers in Griffith Park the Sign was quickly secured. There are those who think modifying the Sign is fun, but this renowned icon should be appreciated not demeaned. The Hollywood Sign Trust is a California 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is tasked with physically maintaining and repairing the Hollywood Sign. Part of the Trust’s mission is also to educate the world about the Sign’s historical and cultural importance. A fan requested we project Eddie Van Halan's iconic guitar design onto the Hollywood Sign in honor of his birthday. We can’t project his guitar but we can say Happy Birthday, Eddie! His band, Van Halen, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Eddie died last October at the age of 65 after battling cancer.... Photo by Waring Abbott/Getty Images
By the end of the 1960's, time had taken its toll on the Sign, but it was also beginning to lend it historical significance. In 1973 the Sign was designated as HistoricCultural Monument #111 by the Cultural Heritage Board of the City of Los Angeles. Once again, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce came to the Sign’s aid. Two committees were formed to help the Chamber raise awareness and funds for the Sign’s restoration: the Save the Sign Committee and the Friends of the Hollywoo...d Sign Committee. We can't believe it's been 8 years since the Sign was completely repainted thanks to Sherwin Williams! It also means we're sneaking up on our 100th anniversary of the Sign - to be celebrated in 2023! . #hollywood #hollywoodsign #sherwinwilliams #hollywoodhistory
2020 has been a rough one for all of us. It's been hard to stay inspired and pursue your dreams when reality can be so hard to handle. But the Sign has always been a symbol of dreams coming true and this year, we are thankful for that. . #hollywood #hollywoodsign #thanksgiving #2020

#TBT to the Sign in disarray before it was rebuilt in 1978. There was a question of whether to save the Sign or tear it down. Can you imagine a Hollywood without a Hollywood Sign? . Photo courtesy of the Hollywood Sign Trust. All Rights Reserved.
Not the Sign but Sign adjacent. Can you imagine a time without the Hollywood Bowl in LA? . #hollywoodsign #hollywoodhistory #hollywoodbowl #tbt #throwbackthursday

A small brush fire broke out in Griffith Park last night. LAFD were able to put it out but it's a good reminder to be extra caution about fires right now. No flames inside the park!

Now you have to go a bit farther for a pumpkin patch than Sunset Blvd and Harper Street. It's hard to imagine Hollywood looking like this.
It's October - Time to get a little spooky - Peg Entwistle, aka the Hollywood Sign girl, jumped off the H to her death in 1923. Some say that the Sign is still haunted by her ghost although no sightings have been seen. Find out more in our detailed history: https://hollywoodsign.org//a-sign-of-the-times-tragic-sui/
On this day in 1949, the Hollywoodland Sign became the Hollywood Sign. . In 1947 the city’s Recreation and Parks Commission advocated tearing the whole Sign down, but residents in the Hollywoodland tract protested. Hollywood Chamber of Commerce president John Kingsley entered the argument by offering, on behalf of the Chamber, to finance the re-erection of the H, provided the last four letters (LAND) were removed. For nearly two years, the battle continued with Hollywood... residents and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce on one side and the Recreation and Park Commission on the other. Finally, in April 1949, the Commission granted permission to the Chamber of Commerce to rebuild the H, remove the LAND, and refurbish the rest of the Sign. . On September 26, 1949, Mayor Fletcher Bowman and John Kingsley puffed their way up the mountain trail and had wind enough to swing a pick-ax for the groundbreaking ceremony. Kingsley predicted the rebuilding of the letter H would be completed within three weeksand it was. With that, the Sign took on a new role: an emblem of the city, the entertainment industry, and the whorl of dazzling associations sparked by the word HOLLYWOOD. See more
We're experiencing unhealthy air quality due to the many wildfires happening around the LA area. Hiking in current conditions is inadvisable - please be careful out there!
The DASH bus that heads into the park (now only stops at on Los Feliz Blvd) and the Parkline Shuttle that travels through the park are both suspended for now. Please plan accordingly. Learn more on our website: hollywoodsign.org
The Hollywood Sign is a No Drone Zone in accordance to the rules laid out by Griffith Park. If you want to fly a drone, skip the hike up to the Sign!
