Summers in Sacramento are hot 100+ degrees HOT! When the mercury rises, there is no better way to cool off than a run through the sprinklers or a refreshing swim. During these ‘dog-days of summer’, everyone’s thoughts turn to water. Of course, so did ours which is why our 40th anniversary legacy project of the month is the Freeport Regional Water Authority Intake Facility (FRWA). In 2009, The HLA Group partnered with CH2M Hill and @Lionakis to provide landscape architec...tural services for this unique infrastructure project. Located along the Sacramento River and visible from I-5, the facility was constructed to supply water to various local water agencies and to serve as an example of artfully integrating form with function. The building itself emulates the shape of a fish and the colored concrete swaths create the appearance of a meandering river. Creative details such as glass-embedded concrete, the incorporation of public art elements, and a unique plant palette elevate the user experience. FRWA is a great example of civic infrastructure integrating engineering, architecture, art, and landscape architecture to create a dramatic, beautiful, and functional site. Accessible from the Sacramento River Bike Trail, jump on your bike and take a trip down the river to check it out! #FRWA #SacramentoRiver #publicart #40years #Legacy #LandscapeArchitecture #StartedInThe80sNowWeHere #PinkFlamingo

In continued celebration of The HLA Group’s 40th anniversary, this month we highlight our work within the City of Folsom. Folsom is a community valued for its rich history and abundance of parks, open space, and multi-use trails. We are proud to have played a role in the design of many of these and other recognizable projects within the City, including Livermore Community Park with its reclaimed flume water play feature, John Kemp Community Park which incorporated the region’...s first synthetic turf field, The Parkway a master planned community designed to incorporate a vast network of trails and open space, Broadstone a master planned community that served as a catalyst for the highly valued retail corridor along East Bidwell and Highway 50, and Intel, which brought a satellite campus and need for local based housing to the City. These are all examples of how landscape architecture weaves together social, economic, and environmental elements to reinforce a community’s character. We are grateful to have played a role in shaping this vibrant City and to be a part of its lasting legacy. #CityofFolsom #Broadstone #JohnKempPark #LivermorePark #TheParkway #40years #Legacy #LandscapeArchitecture #StartedInThe80sNowWeHere #PinkFlamingo

The Napa River has been at the heart of Napa since the area was settled in 1847. Back then, things looked a lot different steamboats ferried people and goods to and from San Francisco while the first official buildings were developed along the river at Third Street. A lot has changed since then, but many things remain the same - people continue to be drawn to the river for gathering and recreation. When the Army Corp. of Engineers proposed flood control measures to conta...in the Napa River as it flows through the downtown, the community advocated for an innovative, functional, yet attractive solution. The HLA Group coupled the engineering requirements with creative urban design strategies to create an inviting greenbelt, pedestrian and commercial corridor. The two-tiered promenade allow access to the river’s edge while providing flood protection for both 10-year and 100-year flood events. Veterans Memorial Park includes an outdoor amphitheater for a variety of community gatherings and cultural events. Through these creative solutions, the Riverfront serves the primary functional needs of flood control while creating spaces for the community to experience the subtle beauty of the river’s edge. #riverfront #napavalley #napariver #napariverfront #40years #Legacy #LandscapeArchitecture #StartedInThe80sNowWeHere #PinkFlamingo

What moves you? Not emotionallybut physically moves you? Public transportation, a car, bike, or walking? If you live in the greater Sacramento area, you’ve most likely taken a ride on the Sacramento Regional Transit (RT) system. Throughout the years, we’ve had the opportunity to design numerous multi-modal transit stations within the region. Our most recent project included the South Line extension from Meadowview to Cosumnes River College which included the Morrison Cre...ek, Franklin, and Center Parkway stations. The integration of various modes of transportation, creating a unique sense of place and the inclusion of public art was paramount in creating a functional and aesthetically cohesive transit corridor. From the sweeping bands of glass-seeded colored concrete to the bold pieces of local art, these stations serve as public plazas/gathering spaces for the communities they serve. Public transportation is more important today then ever before, and we pride ourselves on creating spaces that literally and figuratively move people. #publictransportation #whatmovesyou #SacRT #40years #Legacy #LandscapeArchitecture #StartedInThe80sNowWeHere #PinkFlamingo

Urban design provides the opportunity to shape the built environment around us. Over the course of our 40 years The HLA Group is proud to have collaborated on many of downtown Sacramento’s notable projects. The Cal EPA Building, the Department of Education Headquarters Office and the International World Peace Rose Garden at Capitol Park are past notable examples. Our role as the Criteria Landscape Architect for the Sacramento Central Plant helped blend the functional operatio...n of the facility into the residential neighborhood. Our design for the R Street Market Plaza between 16th and 18th Street were executed in a way that maintains the street’s historic character of shared space between pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles. Our goal has always been to create spaces that integrate into the fabric of the city while maintaining a human scale which is welcoming and attractive. #urbandesign #creatingspaces #40years #Legacy #LandscapeArchitecture #StartedInThe80sNowWeHere #PinkFlamingo

As one of The HLA Group’s most recognizable and ambitious projects, River Walk Park represents an iconic public open space that became the catalyst of the emerging Washington District within the City of West Sacramento. The 1.5-mile pedestrian promenade from the Tower Bridge to the I Street Bridge serves as the primary pedestrian circulation along the levee. Heavy anchor chain barriers which flank plaza spaces and decorative lighting elements speak to a maritime theme. A pass...ive park setting with picnic facilities and paved observation platforms that showcase views of the Sacramento skyline complement the park. River Walk Park took its design inspiration from the river and the history it brought to the area with flowing paths and riparian planting areas to create a shaded aquatic habitat along the Sacramento River. The success of River Walk Park continues today as an important civic gathering space for people to celebrate. #riverfront #maritime #riverwalk #westsacramento #40years #Legacy #LandscapeArchitecture #StartedInThe80sNowWeHere #PinkFlamingo

The HLA Group is excited to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. When we began providing landscape architectural design services in 1980 from a small Auburn Boulevard office, life was a little different: neon colors reigned supreme, the Rubik’s Cube made its debut, and pink flamingo lawn ornaments were all the rage. As we look back on our humble beginnings, from retail developments and suburban office campuses to our present work, we’d like to highlight some ‘legacy pro...jects’ that have defined our company and created a lasting impression within the Sacramento and Central Valley regions. Over the next 12 months we will showcase these projects both large and small. Many projects you may recognize, and if not, we encourage you to visit them. As we reflect, we can’t help but think how grateful and fortunate we are we’ve met amazing people, forged enduring relationships, and created places that have inspired and shaped communities. We continue to believe that quality landscape design has a positive effect in our community and are optimistic and excited for the future. So, with this we say cheers to 40 years! #40years #Legacy #LandscapeArchitecture #StartedInThe80sNowWeHere #PinkFlamingo

The HLA Group celebrated the grand opening of Kammerer Family Park on July 23, 2019. This park represents the 98th park in the Cosumnes Community Services District and features many unique, music-inspired elements. The ceremony included speeches from local dignitaries and the Kammerer Family. The event was filled with smiles and merriment as hundreds of Elk Grove residents enjoyed their new park. Kids ran through the water spray pad and scampered through the music-themed play... area. Families played basketball and rallied on the tennis court. Teens practiced their kick flips and ollies in the skate park. The event featured live music from the School of Rock, a local student-aged band, who performed in the Encore amphitheater. It was a great day to play in the park and even better day to be an Elk Grove resident! Thank you to the Cosumnes Community Services District, The True Life Companies, and City of Elk Grove for working with us on this amazing project! This was a fun and rewarding effort that we are proud to have been a part of this project! See more
