¡Bienvenidos a Grauer! Our world languages teachers would like to personally invite you to attend our Virtual Open House on Saturday, November 7, from 11:00 am to 1:20 pm. At The Grauer School we strive to develop students who are global citizens. As early as middle school, students have opportunities to explore world languages both in the classroom and through expeditionary learning. Seventh grade students participate in a world language rotation in which they engage with t...he culture and languages of French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and American Sign Language. In high school, students select one of these languages to pursue (as well as Japanese) and have the opportunity to travel all over the world, discovering and immersing themselves in different cultures. One of our recent graduates who travelled to Kenya reflects, "We were able to cultivate deep connections with locals and explore education as a vehicle for change. We came away with a deeper understanding of the role education plays in our own lives as well as a perspective of what education looks like in a developing nation." Expeditions provide valuable opportunities for students to think on their feet, make lasting friendships, and offer humanitarian and ecological service. Students have travelled to France, Spain, Thailand, Costa Rica, Japan, Kenya, Ecuador, and more. The Grauer School also welcomes international students, and we recognize that these students contribute substantially to the culture of our school. We hope you will join us at our Virtual Open House to learn more about world languages, expeditionary learning and all the programs that make The Grauer School unique. Environmental Science Class: Farm to Table Harvesting Lessons From Nick Scacco: The Environmental Science class is currently learning about environmental waste. Last week, the students performed a cooking lab on food waste with several students cooking in the school's kitchen and the other students cooking at their homes while connected to our class by Zoom. In this exercise, we used what we might otherwise throw away to make delicious food. We began by making Homemade Ricot...ta Cheese, which produced whey as a by-product. The whey was substituted for milk in the recipe the students used to make Carrot Pancakes. The greens from the carrots were also used to make Pesto, so nothing went to waste. This lab connects to a lesson the class has been studying about how food waste has become a huge problem in the world today, and the lab focuses on what students can do to solve it. The class learned that we produce 2 to 3 times more calories than our population needs, and over 30% of that food gets wasted. We also explored the work of several activists and entrepreneurs and how they are taking action to eliminate food waste, in order to save billions of dollars and address hunger. #grauerschool #grauerscience #greengrauer #environmentalscience #environmentalwaste #cookinglab #usingeverything #nowaste #deliciousfood #deliciousscience #funscience

Welcome to The Grauer School from our Dean Team - Erin Langen, Middle School Dean; Clayton Payne, Dean of Student Support; and Trevor Olson, High School Dean! They and the rest of our faculty and staff would like to invite you to attend our Virtual Open House on Saturday, November 7, from 11:00 am to 1:20 pm. One of the most frequent questions prospective parents ask our admissions team is "Will my child have friends?" At The Grauer School our relationship-based philosophy i...s one of the cornerstones of our unique program. We focus on developing authentic, lifelong connections among teachers and students. As one of our 9th grade parents puts it: It is the supportive, family-like environment of Grauer that we connect with. The personal attention from teachers and the deep connections with classmates in this small school setting support the development of student voice and confidence." We hope you will get a glimpse of the close, compassionate community we have built at Grauer at our Virtual Open House. We look forward to introducing you to our amazing Grauer family. 9th Grade Matriculation Ceremony at The Grauer School Ninth grade students were matriculated and officially welcomed to high school at The Grauer School in a special ceremony on Tuesday, October 27. The ceremony began with the ringing of the school bell atop the Justice Center by Dr. Stuart Grauer and ASB Co-President Reya L. '21. The matriculates then crossed a "threshold of thunder" performed by a percussion ensemble lead by Dean of Student Support Clayton Payne. Having the...n officially entered the ceremony, students cast something from their past, written on dissolving rice paper, into a fountain. This symbolic act was followed by an opening speech by Jillian Bourdon, where she explained the history of the matriculation process and why it's so special at Grauer. At the Grauer School, the Matriculation Ceremony marks students' official commencement to the Grauer High School community. Matriculation is an esteemed, traditional ceremony. In the formal English traditions at the universities in Oxford and Cambridge, the term is used for the ceremony at which new students are entered into the register (in Latin, matricula) of the university, at which point they become members of the university. Students wear academic dress and enter in a formal procession. The Grauer School matriculation is less formal, but meaningful to who we are as a community. Each year, the students receive sweatshirts with the school's name and the students' graduation year not just to symbolize their enhanced connectivity to the school's community, but to mark our confidence in their journey to adulthood. The Matriculation ceremony continued with speeches from Aviya A. '24, Cooper B. '24, and Lily T. '24. Additionally, Dr. Grauer addressed the students about various rites of passage around the world, calling upon the matriculates to maintain the highest standards for ethics and academic integrity, and pledging in return to provide them with the full measure of support as they find their courage and their voice. The Matriculation ceremony continued with the "Roster of Matriculates" where Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs called each student's name and they received a special "Grauer Class of 2024" sweatshirt from Dr. Grauer and Jillian Bourdon as their matriculation gift. Congratulations to our 9th Grade students on their Matriculation into High School! Special thanks to all of the Class of 2024 parents who watched the live-streamed ceremony on YouTube Live to celebrate their student's matriculation. #grauerschool #grauerceremony #matriculation #ritesofpassage #9thgrade #welcometohighschool

7th Grade Life Science - Cell Mysteries From Nick Scacco, 7th Grade Life Science Teacher: 7th Grade students were presented with slides from an imaginary accident scene last week. They were tasked with recording observations and using microscopes to try to determine if the slide contained an animal or plant cell, in order to solve the cell mystery. The focus of this lesson was on noticing overall cell shape, organization, and organelles, as part of their ongoing studies to learn about cells. The students also learned how to use the different powers on the microscopes, as well as the right way to safely carry a microscope. #grauerschool #grauerscience #lifescience #grauerSTEM #studyingcells #understandingcellstructure #solvingcellmysteries #funscience
