The Fullerton Loop is banning performance tracking apps such as Strava, Mapmyride and the like due to its competitive nature. Sgt. Hampton of the local police departed stated; These apps have encouraged mountain bikers, runners and even equestrians to beat their personal best. But all that does is create a dangerous trail environment. Local residents that use the Fullerton Loop signed a petition to ban such apps in late 2017 and the city council voted on the ban, making i...t effective immediately. Fullerton resident and Loop aficionado and fairy house builder(small houses you see along the trail that look like Smurfs live there) was quoted in saying; I’m all for the ban! The last thing anyone needs is to be trampled by a speeding horse just so they can brag on the Internet that they rode the trail faster. Sgt. Hampton also said that people cheat on Strava all the time. We’ve stopped and ticketed mountain bikers who were riding electric scooters or dirt bikes on the trail so they can achieve KOM (king of the mountain). It’s nearly impossible to ride the Loop under 45 minutes, so if we see that on Strava we’ll track that user and set up a sting. 8 times out of 10, that person is doping their Strava efforts. The Fullerton Loop will review this ban in the next few months wether it makes a difference in lowering the accident/collision rates in the trail. But as of today, all performance apps are completely banned. People caught using the app could face a $250 fine or up to 30 hours of community service.
Just a reminder that the Swap Meet is this Saturday.
