For the past 16 years, Hank Newman has been serving as a patient care volunteer with The Elizabeth Hospice. He has a special ability to connect with our patients, even those who are withdrawn. Every patient and family that I serve has led a unique and interesting life, said Hank. It is an honor to be part of their end-of-life experience. Frank was recognized as a Community Hero by the Ramona Sentinel. We are so grateful to the people in our community who serve as volunteers with The Elizabeth Hospice. By sharing their time and talents, they are making a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients and their families. This year’s holiday celebrations were drive-through events around San Diego County and Temecula. Our staff shared holiday cheer through gift-giving and personal warm wishes. We hope all of our volunteers have a holiday season filled with peace, joy and lasting happiness. #volunteers #volunteersrock #thankyou

While caring for a family member who has a life-limiting condition is fulfilling, it can also be quite challenging. We created a new support group to provide adult family and friend caregivers with an opportunity to meet with others who are in a similar situation, learn caregiving tips, and reduce their feelings of isolation. Led by a trained professional facilitator from The Elizabeth Hospice, the Caregivers Support Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 10:00 am to 11:30 am via Zoom. There is no cost to attend and everyone is welcome. We are very grateful to everyone who supported The Elizabeth Hospice during our #GivingTuesday campaign. You make it possible for us to provide medical, emotional and spiritual care to people facing the challenges associated with a life-threatening illness and to those who are grieving the death of a loved one. Nobody has ever been turned away. We could not do this vital work without you. Thank you!

Our volunteers help patients create special keepsakes like fingerprint charms and handprint art pieces. These legacy projects are a way for people to share precious memories with their family members and friends. If you would like to learn how you can bring joy and meaning to people who are nearing the end of their life, contact our volunteer department at [email protected] or 800-797-2050. #hospicesandiego #hospice #volunteer #volunteering #volunteerism #legacy #crafts #keepsake

Coping with the loss of a loved one is always difficult but can be even more challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our trained grief counselors believe it is important for people to talk about their feelings and thoughts. When holding emotional pain, it is helpful to be heard. We educate our clients about the grieving process, let them know that their feelings are valid and provide healthy coping techniques, said Kathlyne Barnum, Clinical Counseling Program Supervisor for The Elizabeth Hospice. To learn more about our individual and group counseling support, conducted virtually until social distancing guidelines have been lifted, call 833-349-2054 or visit https://elizabethhospice.org/grief-support/adult/. #griefsupport #grief #griefandloss

With a great deal of emotion and many shared memories, The Elizabeth Hospice staff celebrated Glenn Panzer, MD’s retirement. During his 16 years of service, as medical director and chief medical officer, Dr. Panzer helped guide the organization through significant growth. Dr. Panzer will be most remembered for his caring heart, gentle manner and sense of humor, said Dr. George Delgado, Chief Medical Officer for The Elizabeth Hospice. In addition to providing exceptional ca...re to his patients and their families, he loved to teach students, residents and fellows. Dr. Panzer went beyond transferring information; he showed them how to be compassionate physicians. Please join us in thanking Dr. Panzer for his commitment to delivering the highest quality palliative and hospice care, and wishing him good health and happiness during his retirement. #hospicesandiego #hospiceheroes See more

John Poortenga, Spiritual Counselor for The Elizabeth Hospice, assures his patients and their families that hospice care is the best type of health care for someone with a chronic and life-limiting illness. Our care teams address symptoms and relieve pain. And because patients don’t need to leave their homes to receive care, we eliminate the stress of going to medical appointments, said John. Everything we do is to help people feel more comfortable. John helps clear up mi...sconceptions about his role as a spiritual counselor. I don’t force religion on anyone. Instead, I’m someone people can talk to during their end-of-life journey. We talk about the things that matter to them their family, work and life experiences. With my training in theology and spirituality, I do ‘soul care.’ I listen with all of my senses and let my patients know they are being heard. For more information about the range of services available from The Elizabeth Hospice, call 800-797-2050. #hospice #hospiceSanDiego #spirituality #hapcFacesOfCaring #hospicecare #healthcare See more
