We are sad to say that two weeks ago on September 27th, a former camper of ours passed away. Aaron or Goofy as we knew him spent summer 2016 with us and was loved by the entire camp community. Such a bright and loving kid. Aaron was a junior at Skyline HS in Oakland. Our prayers go out to Aaron’s family. May he Rest In Peace. Please share this post and donate if you are able. Joy is justice for the middle school youth we serve in Oakland and San Jose who are disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Since we could not be together for summer sleepaway camp or fall outings, we have been providing virtual healing spaces. Our annual fundraiser is virtual too and we hope you can support the healing, growth and leadership of our young people. It’s that time again folks! Our 8th Annual Fundraiser is hereand we’re virtual this time! - For the last 8 years Camp Phoenix has been intentional about love, resilience, and joy in the face of what we see is intentional adversity in the form of systemic racism. We’ve understood the intersections of racial and environmental justice and that if we could facilitate the healing of our youth by reconnecting them to nature, they would, as leaders in their com...munities, facilitate the healing of our earth. We put learning and healing in the hands of our youth and they created an incredibly beloved community of hope and lasting connection. This summer, our rituals of resilience gave us a platform to facilitate healing virtually and to show up for our campers and families in a way we’ve never done before at a time where we were more needed than we understood. The result is a community stronger than ever and this is just the beginning. This year, we will convene virtually on September 10th 5:30-6:30pm Pacific to support the continuation of this amazing community until we can get together in person again. Zoom details to follow. The first 50 participants* will receive a bottle of wine and the first 75* will receive our annual Camp Phoenix coffee mug + s’more kit. Our school year excursions are postponed and no decisions have been made about summer camp. Throwback Thursday! Back in November we visited the California Academy of Science with campers and families! Science and wildlife came alive through demos with staff(we made a snowball and cloud!), strolling through the rainforest and aquarium, and experiencing an earthquake through simulation. Camper Roboboy engaged in an exhibit in the rainforest where he learned that lots of modern day medicines have ingredients from the Amazon rainforest. I wonder what medicines they are and how do they get all those ingredients? And what if it the rainforest gets cut down? We appreciate the ability to have firsthand science experiences to reflect on our most important questions.

Thank you Oakland for giving the gifts of love, joy and opportunity to our kids this summer!
