It was the first or last image in the roll, and something happened when I took it, the image was somehow deformed, as things often are at the beginning or end of anything. A report published on Monday in the journal Nature Communications reveals that the Amazon rainforest is much closer than projected to reaching a tipping point that would transform it into a savannah, endagering countless species and destroying much of its vegetation (https://www.theguardian.com//amazon-near-tipping-point-of-). The preservation of the Amazon rainforest concerns all of us, it has been rightly described as the lungs of our planet. Yet the first human victims of its accelerating destruction are those populations who live within it, and rely on it for their survival. With an eye to the physical, social, and historical properties of their chosen media, these emerging and established artists portray the self in piecesas fra...gments that may accumulate and amalgamate but never entirely cohere. Identity can be as fluid as a watercolor in which one color bleeds into another; as fractured as a collage composed of ripped strips of paper; as multilayered as a painting that has been built up lovingly and laboriously over the passage of time.
