In honor of getting my license 13 years ago, here’s an old post about my 1st year doing hair (swipe for an EXTREMELY attractive photo of me on the day I took my test ) $12,573. That is how much money I took home in my first year as a stylist behind the chair. I graduated from cosmetology school when I was 20, so naturally I thought I knew everything. After 5 months at a commission salon, I was over the whole concept of having a boss and decided I wanted to work for my...self So with basically 5 clients, I decided to booth rent, thinking that this would make me rich. All arrogance aside, back in the days before the ‘gram, getting clients was hard for me. I had more days off than on, and that wasn’t by choice. I didn’t have enough clients to fill my days in the salon. A family member gave me this advice: go back to school. Get a real career where you can make money using your brain instead of your hands. My income didn’t exactly skyrocket the next year, or the year after that, or for many years after that. BUT, I am so thankful I stayed the course and didn’t listen to this BS advice. I spent tens of thousands on educating myself, finally got some clients, and I won’t get into my specific financials, but it’s been 13 years since I graduated from school and I can proudly say I am far from relying on my Mom to support my life. (Shoutout to the best and most supportive mom ever). So if you are just starting out in this industry and are struggling, financially, emotionally, physically (getting used to standing all day is brutal), and are wondering if all this hard work is worth it and if it will pay off, know that it IS and it WILL. This industry can get you down, leave you feeling empty and defeated, and can leave you broke. KEEP GOING, friendsThis industry can also offer you a ton of loyal, caring, kind clients. It can bring you coworkers who become best friends and lift you up. It can give back to you in so many ways. A large part of our job description is making others see that they are beautiful and giving them confidence, which is so rewarding. Oh, and it can bring you a six figure income, which doesn’t hurt either See more
