NEW EPISODE! On June 2nd, 2020 Alvin Dedeaux (@alvin_dedeaux_fly_fishing) posted a video on his Instagram feed that made us think about #racism in America and more specifically, what it’s like to be a #blackman in our sport. In this episode, we have what is perhaps the most uncomfortable conversation we’ve had to date on a topic that is red-hot across the nation. We as hosts muddle through as best we can. It is not the conversation we wanted to have, but we felt we must h...ave. Also Corrine Doctor (@repyourwater) shares what happened after they posted the black square on their Instagram account and how their brand chose to deal with it. #flyfishing #blm

In this episode of the Barbless Fly Fishing Podcast we invited back two of our favorite guests Dr. Michael Larkin and @kaylakatayama to spotlight a flats favorite. @cdfwfisheriesbranch - As requested by Local Governments, CDFW Delays Trout Season Openers As much as it pains us, CDFW has delayed the start of the trout opener in Alpine, Inyo and Mono counties and on the Downie River in Sierra County as requested by county officials due to the public health concerns of COVID-19 and limited heath care facilities in these counties. In addition, CDFW has temporarily postponed fishing on the North Fork Yuba River in Sierra County. The trout ...season was scheduled to open in these counties tomorrow, Saturday, April 25. The delay to the opener extends through May 31, 2020. Specifically, this means all waters in Alpine, Inyo and Mono counties not currently open to fishing will remain closed to fishing through May 31. CDFW is also making minor adjustments to bag and possession limits in waters that are currently open for fishing to protect and conserve the existing fisheries that may be affected by increased angling pressure or harvest. Additionally, fishing is now temporarily suspended on the North Fork Yuba River from Yuba Pass downstream to the confluence with Goodyears Creek and the trout opener on the mainstem of the Downie River is delayed, both through May 31, 2020. These decisions do not affect the trout season in any other county. CDFW will provide accurate information for the angling public online or by phone at (916) 445-7600. Although these delays and temporary restrictions will affect anglers in the near term, CDFW is committed to making sure those fisheries are ready for anglers once these emergency regulations are lifted. This includes our commitment to stocking fish so that anglers will have access to those fish and likely amazing fishing in the very near future!

In yesterday’s meeting the Fish and Game commission voted to grant CDFW the power to allow specific counties the ability to postpone the opening of general trou...t season in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to their remote communities that have limited medical resources. . I understand Californians desperately need the outdoors for solace, reinvigoration and spirituality, especially so right now, said CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham. The proposal was never about a statewide permanent closure. It is about being responsive to local needs in this public health emergency, where we must do all we can as Californians to help each other make it through this together. We intend to use this authority surgically and based on local needs and knowledge. As of now, the counties who have officially asked for this measure are Inyo, Mono and Alpine in the Eastern Sierra but additional counties have inquired as well stating that closing some counties and not others would increase pressure on the places that remain open. There was some vocal opposition from anglers, some of whom stated that the shelter in place ordinance and travel ban as well as social pressure should be enforced to restrict anglers from flooding these remote communities as opposed to closing fishing. This ordinance only gives the department authority to postpone opening of trout season until the end of May. As of now, it is still unclear as to whether year-round fisheries will remain open to locals. We will continue to track these events as they unfold and advocate for anglers’ rights and balance public safety needs. https://cdfgnews.wordpress.com//california-fish-and-game-/
