STAGESCENELA REVIEW FLASHBACK #50 FROM 2007-2008 http://www.stagescenela.com/2007/10/dangerous-corner/ StageSceneLA had only been up and running for a month and... a half when I reviewed a production that continues to exemplify one of the things that Theatre 40 artistic director David Hunt Stafford and his Beverly Hills troupe of actors do best, revive forgotten 20th-century gems like J.B. Priestley’s 1932 mystery thriller Dangerous Corner, a play I described as a surprisingly modern piece of theater with plot twists any contemporary playwright would be proud of. It helped enormously to have the late, great, and much missed Bruce Gray directing. Indeed, I could just as easily be flashing back to the Gray-directed Sequence, Late Company, Flare Path, Double Door, Night Watch, Agatha Christie’s Spider’s Web and Agatha Christie’s Black Coffee, The Voysey Inheritance, and a couple of comediesOpening Night and The Long Weekendwritten by Bruce’s fellow Canadian, the prolific Norm Foster, but Dangerous Corner was the first time I got to rave about Bruce. It was also the first time I got to write about my two favorite T40 couples, Grinnell Morris and Julie Lancaster, and Shawn Savage and Christine Joelle, and what a treat that was, as it was to see the esteemed Nan Tepper (who later that season played Grandma in Neil Simon’s Lost In Yonkers to intimidating perfection), the dashing Joe Regelbrugge (then Joe Briggs) and the lovely Laura Jones on the Theatre 40 stage. Last but not least, Dangerous Corner featured one of resident T40 designer Jeff G. Rack’s pitch-perfect sets, giving his fellow creative artists Meghan Hong, Lani Bartlett, and Marc Olevin a just-right framework for their Grade-A lighting, costumes, and sound designs. From my earliest days as a reviewer, Theatre 40 has proven itself a Beverly Hills treasure, and I can hardly wait for the day I can welcome it back to business. Photos: Ed Krieger See more

A lovely reflection on why we love live theatre, and why we're all missing it so much right now. Thanks to member Suzan Solomon for sending it along!

On behalf of all of us at Theatre 40, we add our voices in solidarity with the millions in the country who support the Black Lives Matter movement and the protests happening here and worldwide. Our Board of Directors, Artistic Committee and family of artists fervently hope that the racism, discrimination and senseless cruelty against people of color which has been embedded in our country since the U.S. was formed finally comes to an end. As a theatre company, collectively and individually, we commit to examining our thinking, improving our practices, and increasing our inclusiveness going forward. We deplore the inhumanity to man that we have all witnessed and will do whatever we can, as a group of artists to call for the end of institutional racism. https://www.adhoc.fm//black-lives-matter-resources-and-fu/
