Huitlacoche. Pronounced whee-tla-KO-cheh, she is a fungus that visits corn plants and, for those not in the know, makes the corn look like she's been infected by a threat to be eradicated. But that's not what we saw. Huitlacoche has been a culinary delight for thousands of years by our ancestors in Mesoamerica. Her name comes from the Nahuatl language, spoken today by nearly 2 million throughout central Mexico. We knew we'd been blessed once we saw her beauty, and so we readily sauteed her generosity for a collective lunch of huitlacoche quesadillas. #DecolonizeYourDiet #BIPOCfarmers #Huitlacoche #Indigenous #Mesoamerica
One year ago tonight we were holding our annual Feast in the Field on our farm. This year because we can’t meet in person we are instead offering Solidarity Shares which translate into 6 discounted weekly CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes of fresh, organic, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables for farmworkers who cannot otherwise afford the produce they pick and pack. Click the link in our bio to read more. Photo by @tim_naf

Dear Abundant Table community, We understand that you and your family may be anxious about news of COVID-19. Please know that your safety and well-being is our top priority. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says there is no evidence of food or food packaging being associated with transmission of COVID-19. In conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the FDA has set up an information page that we are closely monitoring for updates:... https://www.fda.gov//mcm/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19 In addition to our pre-existing food safety handling protocols, per the FDA’s recommendations we are also adopting enhanced hand-washing protocols during harvest and packing, along with increased sanitation during delivery. We also recognize the importance of staying home if we display symptoms of COVID-19 or if we have come into contact with someone who tested positive for or might be carrying COVID-19. To help ensure food access, our Farm Store will continue to remain open daily 10am-5pm, and we will happily accommodate drive-thru grocery pick-up to respect physical distancing measures important during this time. Please contact our Farm Store at (888) 707-6513 between 10am-5pm for assistance or for any questions. () Delivery of our CSA boxes will continue as regularly scheduled, and to support our members who are older adults or people with severe chronic health conditions who may be at higher risk for more serious COVID-19, we are happy to waive home delivery charges for the next two months, or longer as necessary. Please contact us at [email protected] or call (805) 890-1983 so we can set this up for you or your loved ones. Out of an abundance of caution, we are postponing all educational field trips and Open Farms. We’ll send updates as soon as we’re ready to resume. As the situation keeps changing, we will continue to modify our operations. For the most up-to-date information, we have several ways to be in touch: Check our website for updates: https://theabundanttable.org/category/covid-19 Call our Farm Store: (888) 707-6513 between 10am-5pm daily Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/TheAbundantTable Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheAbundantTable Sincerely, Proud to accept EBT/CalFresh https://theabundanttable.org/covid-19-safety-measures-at-t/
@rea.joshi visits the farm! Did you know? Some of our sunflowers are are volunteers. A volunteer is a plant that grows on its own, rather than being deliberately planted by a farmer or gardener. Volunteers often grow from seeds that float in on the wind, are dropped by birds, or are inadvertently mixed into compost.
