It’s crazy to learn that the one of the candidates for judge - a Ventura county DA Catherine Voelker, would hold contests - rewarding the DA who tried the most cases in a 3 month period. These contests would place undue pressure of junior DAs to prosecute cases even when the facts didn’t justify it. Read the attached article. Criminal Justice should not be a game. Today I volunteered my time to Eviction Defense Network. They represent low income families who are facing illegal and unfair evictions. We were facing such a trial today - my clients were allegedly 3 days late on the rent for their rent stabilized apartment they had lived in for 30 years We left Court today with the Land lord agreeing to pay my client $90,000 and forgiving 18 months of rent. Justice served
