This is my annual post regarding breast cancer since it is officially breast cancer awareness month! As many of you know, my mom, Kelly, has been fighting for a... little over 4 years now since the age of 45 (which is super young to be diagnosed with cancer). She was diagnosed de novo, which means she is a part of the 6% of people who are initially diagnosed at a stage 4. Her initial prognosis was stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma, which then quickly turned into metastatic breast cancer (so fast that from the initial mammogram to the following scans it had spread, which is what made her official diagnosis metastatic breast cancer). There are many different types of breast cancer. Not all cancers are the same. Breast cancer is not just breast cancer. Skin cancer is not just skin cancer, etc., My mom was given approximately 5 years to live initially, but she is a participant in the Cleopatra trial and 33% of those participants have increased their life expectancy to 7-8 years instead of just 5. I hope that my mom gets to live the rest of her life to her fullest extent; however, since her original diagnosis with cancer, she has since been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia, so at the moment she is nearly immobile. It is so important to conduct breast exams (male or female!!) every month!!! Stage 4 is NOT curable, but treatable. My mom's cancer started in her left breast, and it spread to her sternum which is what made her a stage 4 at initial, official, diagnosis. Many of you do not know, but my grandmother (her mother), Kate, is also battling melanoma right now, but we still do not know the extent. This was discovered at the end of July, and her surgery in September faced many complications and they were not able to remove the cancer at that point, so that surgery will be attempted again at the end of this month. Hoping for the absolute best. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE AS FULLY AWARE OF YOUR BODY AS YOU CAN BE! It may sound silly, but it's so important!! My mom and grandma were aware, but with my mom it was almost like "this couldn't be happening to me", and by the time she got into the doctor and they did the scans and got the results, it had already spread. There is no shame in going to the doctor! My grandma's melanoma is on her right upper side and her bra band covered it, so unfortunately she did not notice it until it was already 2.5mm deep and that was in July. It is a very aggressive form of cancer and we still do not know anything other than the results of her biopsy and the date of her surgery. Blood work, x-rays, and a mammogram have been done within this past week and we are awaiting results of those. No staging has been made yet, that will happen after surgery. Below are some facts about metastatic breast cancer, because many people are not aware. Being aware of your body could save your life! My heart goes out to everyone who has battled cancer and to every family member and friend who has aided their loved one in their fight. If I can do anything at all, it is to spread knowledge. I have known way too many people to have battled and lost their lives to cancer's complications, as well as survived it. Hopefully we will continue to learn more about cancer. My mom will be on treatment for the rest of her life. Her treatment keeps the cancer cells inactive and prevents spreading, but since the cancer entered her bones, she will never stop fighting for her life, and she will never be cured #metavivor #dontignorestageiv See more
