Our scientists are at it again! Our 4th & 5th graders worked hard to identify the species found in owl pellets. The students distinguished the difference between bird, mole, and shrew skeletal remains through the dissection process. Some even found complete skeletons! Barn Owls are unable to digest the fur and bone of their prey, which they usually swallow whole. The indigestible parts are regurgitated (coughed up through the beak) in the form of an owl pellet. After feedin...g, producing a pellet takes 6 hours or more. After each night’s hunting, an owl regurgitates 1 or 2 pellets. They often contain the remains of up to five small mammals! Take a look at our geeks hard at work. #learningacademystyle

In just under an hour, the OSIRIS-REx will attempt a historic feat for NASA -- to collect first sample collection from an asteroid’s surface. During Touch-And-Go (TAG), the spacecraft will maneuver down to the selected Nightingale site on Bennu’s rocky and dusty surface to collect a sample for return to Earth in 2023. OSIRIS-REx launched Sept. 8, 2016, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and many folks across IV&V and NASA worked hard to make the project happen. Beginning... with an orbit departure maneuver around 1:50PM, the full sequence of the complicated engineering feat will be live via the link below. Happy exploring! https://youtu.be/21X5lGlDOfg
