Tour de France 2013: Orica-GreenEdge win stage four as Simon Gerrans wins yellow jersey, as Orica-GreenEdge storm to victory in the team time trial Pancake flat and very fast, this looks easy in itself, but will be a nasty little test after the toughest opening three days since 1992. Times are taken on the fifth rider to cross the line, so the team that wins will have a nucleus of strong rouleurs who have got through the previous two days of climbing without too much damag...Continue reading

Simon Gerrans wins Stage 3 in TDF 2013 Tour de France 2013: Simon Gerrans wins stage three as Peter Sagan settles for consecutive second-place finishes Geraint Thomas offered his very own definition of sporting courage here in Corsica when he defied the excruciating pain of a cracked pelvis to cycle for 145.5km over a fiendishly twisting mountainous course and force himself to the end of the third stage of the Tour de France....Continue reading

Jan Bakelants Triumphant in Second Stage of Tour de France Belgium's Jan Bakelants won the second stage of the Tour de France Sunday to take the yellow jersey on his debut in the famous race. The 27-year-old, who rides for the RadioShack Leopard team, held off the charging peloton to win by just a single second after the 158km from Bastia to Ajaccio.... Slovakia's Peter Sagan and Poland's Michal Kwiatkowski finished second and third in their desperate bid to overhaul Bakelants. Race favorite Chris Froome of Britain also made his presence felt for the first time, stretching clear on the final of four climbs on the day, before slowing up to allow a group of six riders, including Bakelants, to make their bid for victory. "I saw that, in the last 500 meters that I still had a gap and I said, 'Come one, hold this. It's going to be the nicest day of your life!' And then I did it," he told the official Tour de France website. "I knew I would probably also take this yellow jersey and it's incredible. Maybe it'll be the first and the last time in my career but today I wear it," he added. It was his first win since turning professional in 2009 and he is the first Belgian a stage in the Tour de France since Jelle Vanendert in 2011. He leads the overall standings by that single second from a host of riders, including Froome, 2011 Tour winner Cadel Evans and Spain's Alberto Contador, who had taken a nasty tumble in the chaotic end to the first stage Saturday. Marcel Kittel of Germany won the opening stage, but on the mountainous terrain of Corsica could not stay with the peloton and finished 17 minutes 30 seconds adrift. Britain's sprint ace Mark Cavendish suffered a similar fate but last year's green jersey winner Sagan did grab valuable points in this year's battle with his second place. Young French hopeful Pierre Rolland of Europcar claimed the polka dot jersey for the leader of the King of the Mountains classification after reaching the summit of the Col de Vizzanova in first place. After the incredible events of the first day, when a team bus blocked the finish line, the stage passed off smoothly. Omega Pharma-QuickStep's German star Tony Martin survived to the finish despite being hospitalized after a heavy fall in the crash which also claimed Contador. The third and final leg of the Tour in Corsica will be a 145-km ride from Ajaccio to Calvi Monday.

Marcel Kittel Wins Opener at TDF 2013 BASTIA, Corsica Riders at the Tour de France know to expect the unexpected. But nothing could have prepared them for the mayhem that turned Saturday’s first stage of the 100th Tour into a demolition derby on two wheels. Seemingly for the first time at the 110-year-old race, one of the big buses that carry the teams around France when they’re not on their bikes got stuck at the finish line, literally wedged under scaffolding, unable to m...Continue reading

FACT CARBON What is FACT? Otherwise known as Functional Advanced Composite Technology, FACT represents our holistic approach to working with composites. Like any project at Specialized, FACT bikes and equipment are based on the needs of the rider, then we apply critical disciplines to achieve the design targets that will best serve those rider needs: Design , Material Selection, Fabrication Process, and Testing. What’s the result of the FACT process? Superior carbon bikes and... equipment that deliver real-world performance benefits for the target rider. STEP 1: RIDERS NEEDS Guided by the needs of the rider experience Competitive Road, Triathlon, CX, etc.we determine best combination of propertiesincluding stiffness, compliance, strength, and weightfor each product. STEP 2: DESIGN Innovation and optimization. This is where we dream up new technologies to make each bike the best of its breed. For example, the one-piece BB/chainstay design resists defl ection under pedal loads for improved power transfer, and was an innovation borne from this process. STEP 3: MATERIAL SELECTION Before manufacturing begins, we select the specific fibers, resins, and weaves for each bike. Just as important as the carbon we select is the fi ber orientation or Layup Schedule Development (how the carbon is wrapped or placed on the frame). A good example is our S-Works Roubaix, where the down tube, bottom bracket, and top tube utilize a higher mixture of E390 high modulus carbon fi ber, which is stiffer to prevent torsional fl ex for better power transfer. This area uses mostly 0-degree angle fibers to make it very stiff. STEP 4: FABRICATION PROCESSES We create the carbon layup for each bike, choose the appropriate manufacturing method, and bake the finished frame. For example, the Roubaix frame has seatstays constructed from E240, a lower modulus but higher tensile strength carbon that allows the stays to flex and absorb vibration, but remain strong over the life of the bike. These fibers are mainly oriented in 45-degree angles to allow vertical compliance, but maintain torsional stiffness. STEP 5: TESTING Testing is a crucial part of the FACT carbon development cycle. To be sure that our bikes live up to your (and our) expectations, all of our bikes undergo extensive testing in the lab, as well on the road and trail. We lab-test frame prototypes at all load points, ride test them with our pros, then make multiple iterations until we're satisfied.
