ABYC Junior Sailing 15.11.2020

The first SCOT practice (Southern California OPTIMIST TEAM) was held this last Sunday at ABYC. This amazing video perfectly captured the day. It was a great turnout with 22 sailors from all over Southern California working to prepare for the regatta January 17-20. We are looking forward to having sailors from all over the United States arriving at ABYC in January for the 2020 OPTIMIST TEAM RACE MIDWINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS.

This week we meet a new coach: Pearce Mendoza! Pearce joins us with a multitude of sailing experience, finding ABYC as his main training grounds for the last two years. As a sailor, Pearce worked his way up the ranks in the Naples Sabot fleet, returning to Gold Fleet at Junior Nationals many times. His experience in the sabot taught him that he had the need for speed and really enjoyed going fast. Throughout the last few years, Pearce has widened his view for our sport, compe...ting in his 29er across the country and here at home. The knowledge gained from participating in the last few CISA Advanced Racing Clinics here at ABYC have propelled his career, landing him a spot at the RedBull Youth Foiling Generation in Miami, FL. There, Pearce and his partner Jack Sutter fought hard, only getting bested in the Quarterfinal round. Pearce hopes to bring his experiences back to more youth here at ABYC, and help foster their love of our sport, wherever that may take them! We are excited to welcome Pearce to our Coaching Staff for the Summer of 2019! See more

ABYCs Summer Camp is almost here! Don't miss the most fantastic program you can do in Long Beach! If you aren't on the ABYC mailing list, check out the bios on some of our returning coaches here:... Taylor Milefchik! Taylor has had an amazing history representing and giving back to the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. As a young girl, Taylor sailed her Naples Sabot in Alamitos Bay, where she fell in love with sailing. As she continued her sailing career, she enjoyed the aspects of sailing which bring us all closer together and proudly sailed for Long Beach Polytechnic High School from 2015 until she graduated in the Spring of 2018. Her passion for sailing, as well as her unwavering dedication to learning and her studies landed her at George Washington University. Although G.W. sails z420s for their collegiate program, Taylor sails many boats across the spectrum, including CFJs, C420s, Viper 640s, and various large keel boats. This will be Taylor's fourth year with ABYC! We are excited to welcome Taylor back to the ABYC Coaching Staff for the Summer of 2019! Dylan Styron! Dylan has had multitude of experiences at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, not afraid to try new things and push hard to succeed at what he tries. Dylan grew up in the sailing world, starting like many here in Long Beach in a Naples Sabot. Since the early days of his sailing career, he knew that he wanted to go fast and work hard. This drive pushed Dylan towards sailing skiffs starting at the age of 14, in the 29er class. At 29er Worlds 2017, at ABYC, Dylan and his skipper Jack Taugher placed 29th in their fleet, winning some battles and learning a ton to further accelerate his sailing skills. Dylan currently sails on the Wilson High School Team out of ABYC, and picked up Laser sailing on top of that, competing last summer in the Laser North Americans, also held at ABYC. Dylan's varied experiences, along with his enthusiasm and youth, help the next generation of our sport continue to learn and have fun every single day! We are excited to welcome Dylan back to the ABYC Coaching Staff for the Summer of 2019! Interested in joining our coaching staff for 2019? Send an email to [email protected]. We are always looking for enthusiastic sailors to help make our summer program even better! Go to abyc.org/summer-2019 for more info!

Come join us for a fantastic and fun wine and beer tasting on the lovely lawn at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. The best part is the tasting also benefits our sailors... from Alamitos Bay. All proceeds go directly to ABSF programs which include: travel assistance, scholarships, coaching and sailing equipment. We have some great auction items this year including: a helicopter ride around LB and LA and vacation stays in Monterey, Big Bear and Palm Springs among others. A little #tbt action to when Roxy & Charley Snyder took on the 2018 29er Youth Champs! Fighting hard the whole regatta, they showed us what true sportsmanship is taking home the Dave M. Perry Sportsmanship Trophy and spent this past summer keeping the #29er grind going. Great job ladies. #sail #sailing #skiff #ocean #beach #29ersailing #49ers #actliktheylikeeachother #sistersailing #girlsshred
