Attorneys are getting informational updates daily (often more) as the court administrators and presiding judges seek to find solutions to the many ways in which this unprecedented situation is impacting our daily operations in and out of court. Similarly, local governments are struggling with how to give effect to the state and federal orders. COVID-19 Impact on all California State Courts Last night (March 23, 2020) the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, Justice... Tani Cantil-Sakauye, issued an order halting jury trials for sixty (60) days and authorizing superior courts to take steps to address the impacts of COVID-19 by implementing local restrictions. If a civil matter is set for a jury trial within the next sixty days then it will be continued. The link to a PDF of the order is here: https://newsroom.courts.ca.gov/_gallery/get_file/ Local Court Responses Orange County Superior Court has vacated all civil hearings currently set to occur over the next 60 days. Those hearings will be re-set to later dates. Los Angeles County Superior Court has suspended all trials, including unlawful detainer trials, until further notice. Hearings and motions have also been impacted. Other courts have taken, or will take, similar action. Please note that some courts continue to accept online filings of court papers but we have also experienced some delay in submitting documents by efile. San Diego, for example, has placed all filings on hold. The situation evolves daily.
