ICYMI: Neutrophils split into different types and migrate to organs to induce antigen-specific T-cell responses. This basic research study by Mauro Di Pilato, Santiago F. Gonzalez, and colleagues used in vivo imaging of viral infection in mice, flow cytometry, and RNA sequencing and analysis. These methods uncovered insights into the effect of neutrophil type on T-cell induction. Using these insights, the authors were able alter neutrophil migration and augment HIV-specific T...-cell responses to HIV antigens delivered by a poxvirus, vaccinia virus (VACV) vector. These insights into immune response mechanisms could offer alternative strategies for vaccine vector design for prevention of HIV and other viral infections. This #ThatsGoodScience Thursday, we are cheering on Korukluoglu et al. for creating a rapid SARS-CoV-2 detection assay and quickly sharing it with the world. Fast SARS-CoV-2 variant detection is a crucial part of COVID-19 surveillance, and assays that accurately detect existing and new variants help us understand viral propagation. Scientists from the World Health Organization (WHO) and from Bioeksen R&D Technologies Ltd. developed a 40-minute RT-qPCR assay to simultaneousl...y screen for both B.1.1.7 and B.1.351 variants, discovered in the UK and South Africa, respectively.
