Thank you for sharing Lori It still pains our hearts . . Repost @loriloriohlori ... #fbf to Memories of San Jose @tahitifete ... because I got sad after the forever cancellation announcement of the Event... So grateful for all the great memories ... I don’t think I really had an understating of how much work, dedication, and preparation it takes to put on a performance until after I experienced dancing at San Jose ... it still amuses me#dancelife #ehonuitie ... These kids are fabulous, dancing to our saxophone player’s song, Kahulanui Boogie Woogie! Bill Noble of the band Kahulanui wrote this song and it won Instrume...ntal Jazz song of the Year at the 2018 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. Does anyone know the dancers, teacher or the name of the school? We are all so excited, especially Bill that the kids are performing his song! Check it out... See more
IaOrana dancers and musicians! We are preparing the entry application for the 2019 Tahiti Fete of San Jose. Please text me for an application especially if you are a new group or have changed your email address. It will be held at the San Jose State University Event Center on July 4-6. Unfortunately, due to escalating costs of putting on a program this size in San Jose, this will be our last San Jose Fete. Hopefully, we can move it to another California city in two years.
This is Oswaldo Espejel Rivera. I write this post in the hopes that no one else, no more respected instructors in Hawaiian or Tahitian Dance be cheated by this... man again. Last month I went to Mexico to judge a hula competition that lasted 2 days. I knew the budget was small so agreed to let someone else negotiate for our judging fee and instead taught a seminar with the understanding that I would make the money earned from the seminar. For 2 days of judging and attendance to a dinner, all events that generate income for Oswaldo, each judge made $200. He paid the 2 other judges their workshop fees and waited till I was leaving at the airport to tell me he had nothing for me. NOTHING! Mind you, if not for my students in Mexico, there would be no competition. My students provided all ground transportation for judges, salsa band for dinner, lei for all participating professors, dinner for all judges, Oswaldo, his staff AND his friend (for one evening). Oswaldo let ME treat everyone to dinner on our last night. Oswaldo and the staff barely attended to us. So where did my workshop money go? I had 30 students in the class. How much did you pay him to attend? I am not the first victim. When Keano and Uncle Kunewa went, they didn’t get paid. There are also Tahitian instructors in Cali that said they are still waiting for their payment from last year and years passed. We need to help each other out and call out people like this who take advantage of us. I do not leave my family, my Halau and my Hawai’i for free, I’m sorry. It’s not the money that is the core of my anger and disappointment, it is the lack of respect and lies. See more

One thing I love deeply about many of the local Heiva is that they truly support eachother. . . It is not only about perpetuating the Tahitian culture & dance outside of Tahiti but also sharing the love for the culture within the various communities. We can do this by supporting each others events and making easier for others to experience the mana from the dance. .... . Events such as heiva or poly festivals were some of the best memories I had growing up and I hope that many more children get to experience that same joy and excitement . #Repost @heivamaohiopatitifa Heiva Ma’ohi O’ Patitifa will return on August 17, 2019 with updates to the event. We look forward to seeing you all in upcoming 2018 Heiva throughout California. Please support! Manahere I Ori Tahiti (July 28-29), Heiva I Reno (August 3-4), Heiva I San Diego (August 11-12), Heiva O’ Ta’u Ori (September 1-2), Te Fa’a No Te Ori (November 3rd). Deepest Mauru'uru roa for being a part of Heiva Ma'ohi O' Patitifa in past years and look forward to seeing you in 2019! #heivamaohiopatitifa #faaitoito #heivamaohi. 2017 Tane Grand Champion - Eli Tiguelo.
