Click below to see a cervical spinal fusion patient of ours during recovery. Cervical spinal fusion (arthrodesis) is a surgery that joins selected bones in the neck (cervical spine). This procedure is often done to prevent a bone fracture from causing instability or damage to the spinal chord after an injury. It can treat conditions such as misalignment of the vertebrae or performed as a follow up procedure to treat other spinal conditions (eg. stenosis). There are different ...methods of doing a cervical spinal fusion: Bone can be taken from elsewhere in your body or obtained from a bone graft. The bone is used to make a bridge between vertebrae that are next to each other. This bone graft stimulates the growth of new bone artificial fusion materials may also be used. Metal implants can be used to hold the vertebrae together until new bone grows between them. Metal plates can be screwed into the bone, joining adjacent vertebrae. An entire vertebra can be removed, and the spine then fused. A spinal disc can be removed and the adjacent vertebrae fused. This procedure can be done through an incision on the front (anterior) or back (posterior) of the neck.

Meet Synapse's patient, Ron. He was a patient of both Dr. Haronian and Dr. Kohan, diagnosed with CRPS, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. He tells us how happy he was to be a patient at Synapse. He recognized the thorough care from our doctors and staff and really appreciated being treated as an individual, not just a diagnosis. ... Complex regional pain syndrome is an uncommon form of chronic pain that usually affects an arm or a leg. Complex regional pain syndrome typically develops after an injury, surgery, stroke or heart attack, but the pain is out of proportion to the severity of the initial injury. The cause of complex regional pain syndrome isn't clearly understood. Treatment for complex regional pain syndrome is most effective when started early. In such cases, improvement and even remission are possible.

Kelli was injured at work, she fell down a flight of 15 stairs. She injured her knee and had been suffering from excruciating pain since. She underwent a knee surgery performed by Edwin Haronian MD and Pain Management treatment with Jonathan Kohan MD. She has made enormous improvements under the care of Synapse Orthopedic Group. Knee arthroscopy is a surgical technique that can diagnose and treat problems in the knee joint. During the procedure, your surgeon will make a very small incision and insert a tiny camera called an arthroscope into your knee. This allows them to view the inside of the joint on a screen. The surgeon can then investigate a problem with the knee and, if necessary, correct the issue using small instruments within the arthroscope. We are so happy we could help Kelli on her road to recovery.

#FACTFRIDAY Everyone knows the ribs protect our hearts. While most people have 12, some have 13! A 13th rib is rare only 1 percent of people are born with it. In most people, this extra rib, called a cervical rib, can cause medical issues like neck pain. For that reason, people born with this extra rib often have it removed. Synapse wishes you a Happy Valentine's day!

Hoping everyone had a fun & safe Super Bowl Sunday. We saw some tackles that were rough! Most people think of professional athletes when they think of sports medicine. However, sports medicine is a lot more expansive than just that. Any person who lives an active lifestyle or participates in an active activity such as running, swimming, or recreational sport can use sports medicine. Fortunately we have Dr. Nassos at Synapse who is specialized in sports medicine. For more info, give us a call.
