We are elated to celebrate with our DACA family this morning! SCOTUS decided that (1) it has the authority to review the DACA case, and (2) the termination of the DACA program by the Trump Administration was arbitrary and capricious in violation of the APA. The protection offered by SCOTUS today is temporary. So it is imperative that we continue to advocate for immigration reform, including the implementation of the American Dream and Promise Act. We also emphasize the i...mportance of voting in all elections, especially this upcoming Federal Election. We encourage registering to vote by mail as we are still affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. This decision hinged on procedure and was won narrowly, 5-4. Only Justice Sotomayor agreed that Trump’s attempt to end DACA was motivated by discrimination against Latinos. In our Canvas Announcements, we have a comprehensive summary of what the decision means for DACA recipients.

Yani and her partner Dayana fled homophobic persecution in Cuba, but when they applied for asylum in the U.S., they were sent to detention. Dayana was released. Yani was transferred to the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center where she and other women went without toilet paper and soap for nine days straight. Yani is just one example of how ICE is arbitrarily detaining LGBTQ asylum seekers and putting them in harms way. Take action to #ReleaseAsylumSeekers today:... https://immigrationequality.org/get-involved/take-action/ #FreeYani #LiberenAYani

As Black History Month comes to a close, we would like to pay tribute by recognizing one of our members who has a unique perspective being half Latina and half Black. Tatiana Owens is a first year at Southwestern Law School from South Central, California. She has become a member of the Black Law Students Association, the Women’s Law Association, and serves as the Section B Representative for the Latino Law Students Association. She is a full time student and a full time mom h...aving a eight year old son. Her perseverance in law school has landed her a position at the Los Angeles Public Defenders Office this summer. She says: "Growing up bi-racial came with plenty of identity struggles. I was raised to embrace both cultures yet others consistently categorized me as just Mexican or just Black or choosing to ignore my background altogether assuming education and passion made me somehow unlike other members of my community. Being a student at Southwestern has bestowed on me an opportunity to connect with people from similar cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds who have accepted me for exactly who I am, shown me endless support and encouragement, and share my passion to uplift people in our communities exemplifying the power and resilience that defines being a person of color. We commend her for all of her accomplishments. #blackhistorymonth #lawtina #afrolawtina #latinolawstudents #latinasinthelaw #gobison
