Happy #Juneteenth. Today, we celebrate the ending of slavery in the United States and commemorate the monumental struggle and accomplishments of Black Americans. Juneteenth occurred on June 19, 1865, marking the day that Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. We encourage our Southwestern community to take time today to learn more about this holiday and for some self-reflection.
