Yesterday, the San José City Council voted 7-3 in favor of hazard pay! Under this ordinance, people working at large grocery stores (with more than 300 employees nationally) will be paid $3/hour on top of regular wages. Unfortunately, the proposal didn’t receive the 8 votes needed to pass as an urgency ordinance (meaning it would go into effect right away). By voting against hazard pay, Mayor Sam Liccardo and Councilmember Dev Davis and Matt Mahan delayed the process by 44 d...ays costing full-time grocery workers $750. Rather than stand with essential workers, Councilmember Mahan introduced his own proposal with provisions that would exclude more essential workers from receiving hazard pay and open the city up to potential lawsuits. It is disappointing to see the Mayor and his allies continue to protect corporate profit over working people. Nonetheless, this victory is a step towards an equitable COVID-19 recovery and will be crucial for people working at grocery stores who have put their lives on the line throughout this pandemic in order to keep our communities fed. Next, the hazard pay ordinance will return to Council on 2/23 for a 2nd reading and after its approval will go into effect 30 days later.

On Tuesday, February 23rd, the Santa Clara Board of Supervisors is voting on $5/hour hazard pay for people working at large grocery stores, pharmacies, and fast food chains. People working in food retail have put their lives at risk every day to keep us all fed. Hazard pay would provide working people with much needed assistance to pay for food, gas, rent, and emergency savings in case of COVID-19 exposure. Can you join the meeting and ask the Board to stand with essential workers? Sign up and we’ll send you a text reminder when it’s time to log onto the Zoom meeting. https://act.siliconvalleyrising.org/speak_county_hazardpay

Tonight, the San José City Council will take a second vote on hazard pay for people working at large grocery stores during the pandemic. For hazard pay to take effect right away, we need 8 yes votes. If Mayor Sam Liccardo and Councilmembers Matt Mahan and Councilmember Dev Davis vote no again, it will delay the law for 44 days. These delay tactics mean the Mayor and his allies would take $750 out of a full-time grocery worker’s pockets. Can you call into the meeting and urge the Council to stand with our essential workers by adopting hazard pay right away? https://sanjoseca.zoom.us/j/91325378626

Hazard pay would help Tyler pay off medical bills and get married at the end of the year. But San José Mayor Sam Liccardo and Councilmembers Matt Mahan and Councilmember Dev Davis are trying to delay by 44 days, which would take $750 away from a full-time grocery worker. Tell the Mayor and his allies to stop delaying and support the essential workers who are putting their lives at risk to keep us fed! Our communities have pulled together to build the world that we know is possible a world where everyone’s voice and vote counts, and where our families, our communities and the people we love are safe. In the past days and weeks we’ve seen this commitment in action from volunteers making phone calls to get out the vote, to voters showing up to cast their ballots, to communities showing support for each other at the polls and making the voting-in-person process more acces...sible. Now, we must demand that every single vote is counted and that a government elected by and for us is sworn in. We are gathering today with the Protect Our Community coalition to rally in demand that all votes be counted.

Morgan Hill Mayor, Rich Constantine, is supporting #Prop15 this election. Prop 15 would bring in $5 million a year for Morgan Hill Unified Schools District and millions more for the services Morgan Hill residents need. At our schools, that funding would let us upgrade technology in our classrooms, reduce class sizes so students get more individual support, and support music and arts education. For our city, Prop 15 will help us restore services we’ve been forced to cut due... to Covid-19 budget shortfalls, fix our streets and help all our residents access fast broadband internet.
