Thayer' is returned from drydock. Two tugboats are scheduled to enter Aquatic Park Cove with 'C.A. Thayer' in tow and move the vessel to her berth. The closure will expire when the tugs have departed the Cove. John Skoriak wrote in our December 11 'Lecronic Latitude that both the 'C.A. We're happy to have our one-day-per-month delivery driver, Mike Holmes on the crew. Not only is he delivering our January issue today, he also caught this photo... of Octavia Taylor from the Parts Department at Svendsen's Marine and took the drone photo of 'Viveka' in this month's Sightings section accompanying the story he wrote about delivering her down the coast last month. We caught Mike (on the right) with the driver from the printer as he loaded up to head to Richmond and the East Bay early this morning. See more

Yesterday we finally made it to Svenden's in Alameda. That place is off the hook - imagine if you asked Costco what a West Marine should be and built that in a ...huge warehouse under the shadow of the East Bay container ship cranes. With an eye towards upcoming offshore passages, we have started to accumulate the very best safety equipment we can find. First up: a pair of dual-length safety tethers, a hi visibility waterproof jacket for Lance, and a dog overboard alarm for Chloe's collar that will be linked to Minerva's GPS. Merry Christmas!

After over 30 years of incredible service and dedication, Chris Straub has officially retired. We thank him for all the years of knowledge, funny jokes and quick comebacks. Straub is one of a kind and will be missed. But we don’t say good bye, just see you later! We’re on standby waiting for him to get bored, then we’ll be ready to take him back! Oseberg ship : The famous Norwegian Viking ship, the Oseberg ship, was built in AD 820, buried in a grave mound 14 years later, and excavated in 1904. Shortly after the excavation, the 21.5m long and 5.0m wide ship was re-assembled and exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum, in Bygdøy, Oslo. Almost 95% of the ship has survived, and in the 100 years it has been on display, it has been regarded as a faithful reconstruction. Despite the ship's unusually high-levels of preservation, when the ship was assembled and put on display, a number of decisions were made which require close examination. #osbergship #norwegian #viking

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT: Smith's Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES) consists of a tough, flexible resin system in a solvent blend which dissolves the sap, oil and moisture found in wood. The resin system is derived from natural wood resin and develops a chemical adhesive bond to the wood fibers themselves. The wood is strengthened while allowing normal expansion and contraction with changes in temperature and humidity. When repairing wood that has mild dry rot, the CPES will... migrate along the abnormal porosity which dry rot fungus creates within the wood, as long as it continues to be fed in. Impregnation of wood with CPES changes the cellulose of wood (which fungi and bacteria find tasty and easily digestible) into epoxy-impregnated cellulose which resists further attack by fungi and bacteria while reinforcing the wood, accomplishing restoration. Instructor, racer and Naval Architect Roberto G is helping us redesign the venerable Santa Cruz 27 deck. Garret and Drew have been looking literally for YEARS f...or a boat that can replace the 27 to teach the ASA 104 Basic Coastal Cruising on. We replaced all of our aging Santana 22's with the awesome Andrew's 21's for the basic level classes but we need to replace the SC 27's as they are pretty difficult to teach docking, etc on as the engine layout is funky and truth be told the cockpit design is pretty dated. The SC27 is a VERY well built boat, light, fast and a delight to sail. Being an ultralight means you can put a much smaller outboard on it and it powers like a tugboat! We're trying to devise electric options for this but nothing is there...quite yet. Voila! Roberto has come up with a clean modern design that meets our criteria - Larger Cockpit - Open Transom for outboard motor operation/ease - Small Cuddy Cabin. Will still sleep 4 ! Now we'll reach out to the class to see how they feel about it. The Moore 24 class has allowed open transoms and there's several deck versions of that boat racing together.
