#Happy2019, y'all! #NewYearNewGrowth! The start of a New Year reminds us to reexamine if we're getting what we want out of life. Do you feel like things are a little gray or dull for you recently? I can help with that!... #WorkLifeBalance is a real thing, and you might be surprised to realize the thing that's missing is ! I'm realizing I identify so strongly with my #DancerOfAllTrades hashtag because I'm so passionate about the benefits of learning to become a #WellRounded #SocialDancer. Competition and performance dance are extremely valuable for certain personality types, but for a lot of us, we just see people twirling their partner at a wedding or concert and just really envy THAT experience! That's why I feel so strongly about getting more than one style under your belt as a casual learner. You don't need to learn five dances right away, but if you can #DoTheHustle and #SwingDance, those two dances cover a wide range of music, so you can spend less time sitting on the sidelines and more ON THE FLOOR. As for me, the fun and #fitness quotients were so high that once I got a few dances down, I just had to learn more styles! My #2019Goals are to get some new growth by refining the dances above (the ones I know the least about)! Let's slay stagnation and bring some color into your New Year! The end of the year is always a good time for some self-reflection. Self-analysis can be tricky, but I've felt strong progress this year: both the slow improvement that comes with direct teaching experience, and the more rigorous progress that's come from the extensive research and many hours' hard work at building my own syllabi. I'd like to thank my fellow teachers for helping me doublecheck my work, find patterns I may have missed, or bounce ideas, especially @rawrwithshan...na -- it's so so appreciated! I've also felt a renewed awareness of my weak spots (always a good sign of progress) and a renewed desire to learn new styles. Although I can teach roughly 30 dance styles, including the ones pictured, there are a few of these dances that could use some brush-up, and other dances not shown here that I definitely couldn't teach, or have barely danced myself. We took our first #Zouk class! We've been wanting to try it out for a while... Our continuing #danceventures in #SanDiego... I dared not enter the #UglyChristmasSweater competition. These two had a lock on it! Thanks to a recommendation from our new friend Mark (who we met at the FUNtastic Fridays #WestCoastSwing dance the previous night), we checked out the final #ProjectSwing dance at #StarlightDance Studio. I was fortunate to take a class from @parker_dearborn who (hopefully) added a little tweak to how I think about the dance. Parker started this ev...ent roughly 10 years ago as an outreach to help more people see and try West Coast, and has been flying down to San Diego each month to run the dance ever since he moved to San Francisco a few years back. He's ending ProjectSwing's participation in the event so he can focus more on running #SwingDiego, and as I understand it, the WCS dances at Starlight will continue! @haleygoodlettart and I are in San Diego for the holidays and while we're here we're trying to dance as often as we can! Our first night here we found a sweet little #WestCoastSwing event called FUNtastic Fridays at Studio K. They hold a little meet-and-greet gathering at a nearby restaurant beforehand, which caught my attention, because icebreaking can be hard at dance events. These folks were super #welcoming and #inclusive, and we had a blast! The event was intimate without suffering a lack of partners, and I don't know if I saw anyone turn down a dance the whole evening. To boot, we made some new friends, and got additional recommendations of where to dance! Awesome music, too!
