To our dear patients: This is the time to be smart and remain calm. Springtime is the time of the liver, the wind, and wood. It is about movement, transformation, and new life. So its time to do our spring cleaning, its time to make some changes, and its time to embrace this opportunity for thought, to change our lives for the better. ... Some thoughts: I highly recommend reinforcing our immune systems by getting good sleep and eating as well as possible. For some guidance on that I recommend checking out https://www.cdc.gov/sleep/about_sleep/sleep_hygiene.html for sleep advice, and https://healthyeating.sfgate.com/good-diet-sedentary-lifest for dietary ideas when you are forced to be less active outside. Unfortunately much of our usual diet and exercise regimes may be interrupted for a while and its good to move the body during the springtime so please look at http://www.samsarawellnesscenter.com/online. They are working on offering more online yoga and meditation so check back in a few days to see what's been added. If you're allowed to walk your dog, do it 3 times a day! Take advantage of this forced vacation by learning how to do some new things! As a lifelong nerd, I highly recommend perusing The Great Courses: https://www.thegreatcoursesplus.com/ (you get a free trial!), the podcast 99% Invisible, and please watch something funny on Netflix. I personally have been watching The Good Place. If you are interested in learning some acupressure please check out https://www.pressthispoint.com/ and start with episode 8 on how hard to press. Sara Calabro is a well known acupuncturist and journalist who is helping to pave the way for Chinese Medicine. For better or worse I am here for you. If you need to reach me please send me an email at [email protected] and I will respond as soon as possible. See you soon, -- Dr. Maile Helgeson L.Ac Sustain Community Acupuncture

Happy Monday, Everyone! Hope you had a great weekend! X-ray vision is something that comes from science fiction, but these researchers are making that more of a reality. Specifically, creating a camera that can see through the skin!... "An interdisciplinary effort is underway to develop a camera that can see through human skin. Led by Rice University, the five-year, $10 million program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The aim is make it easier for doctors to diagnose and monitor a wide variety of health conditions. The project hinges on the use of powerful sensors and new computation methods to capture and interpret light that penetrates the skin but scatters off internal tissues and anatomical structures." Happy Almost Friday, Everyone! We all know that exercise is great for the body...BUT also for the mind! "Neuroscientists have known for some time that the potency of our synapses depends to some degree on how we live our lives. Lack of sleep, alcohol, diet and other aspects of our lifestyles, especially stress, may dampen the flow of messages between brain cells, while practice fortifies it. Repeat an action and the signals between the cells maintaining the memory of that act...ion can strengthen. That is learning. There also have been hints that exercise might affect synapses in the hippocampus. Exercise has been shown in many studies to improve learning and memory. But only a few past animal studies have closely tracked changes to synapses after exercise and none looked simultaneously at stress, leaving the results unrepresentative of actual life, which always contains some amount of stress." DID YOU KNOW... That acupuncture can be effective in helping those with essential tremors? "Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine researchers find two types of acupuncture effective for the treatment of essential tremor. Zone needling of the chorea tremor control area produced a 96.7% total effective rate and conventional acupuncture produced a 73.3% total effective rate. More importantly, a three month follow-up finds relapse rates are relatively low. The zone style sc...alp acupuncture group relapse rate was 13.81% and the conventional acupuncture relapse rate was 45.5%. The results indicate that the zone style scalp acupuncture group’s treatment protocol is more effective than the conventional acupuncture group’s protocol." Happy Monday! Hope you all had a great weekend! Ever heard of a "silent disco"?... "Looks some care centers are embracing this fun and moving activity! Silent discos, popular at music festivals and clubs geared towards Generation Y, have found a new posse of fans in aged-care centres across Australia. Three facilities run by Feros Care in northern New South Wales have recently introduced weekly silent discos where music is played through wireless headphones instead of a loudspeaker system. Positive living co-ordinator Jennie Hewitt said the combination of music and dance was proving to have therapeutic benefits, particularly with dementia sufferers. "One of the residents came along to the disco and he was in his wheelchair and he was quite withdrawn, he had his eyes closed and his head down, but as we put the headphones on, he started to tap his foot, and then he opened his eyes and looked around and in the end he was kicking his legs to New York New York," she said." Women and Heart Attack In this Time Magazine article, heart attacks in women are often missed or overlooked. "Almost 30% of women who had a heart attack in a new study sought medical care for related symptoms before they ever went to the hospital but more than half of their doctors didn’t think their ailments were heart-related.... The reason why so many women are falling through the cracks may have to do with the variety of heart-attack symptoms that women experience, according to the paper published in the journal Circulation. Researchers from the Yale School of Public Health interviewed almost 3,000 heart attack patients younger than 55 two-thirds of them female about their symptoms, when they sought medical care and hospitalization, if they immediately suspected a heart attack and more. The results highlight a few key differences in symptoms between the sexes." Read more about this topic by clicking on the link below! http://time.com/5168411/women-heart-attack-symptoms/

DID YOU KNOW... That acupuncture can help alleviate some symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia? "Researchers find acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine effective for the alleviation of urinary retention caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition often referred to as enlargement of the prostate gland. Benign prostatic hyperplasia often leads to bladder, kidney, and urinary tract disorders. The prostate enlargement may block the flow of urine and caus...e discomfort or urinary retention. Common symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia include weak urine flow or a stream of urine that starts and stops. Dribbling towards the end of urination or the incomplete emptying of the bladder are also common. There may be difficulty initiating urination, frequent or urgent urination, and nocturia (excessive urination at night)."
