MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY. Martin Luther King Jr. (19291968), Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King Jr. followed his father and grandfather into the ministry, and he later received his Ph.D. As the leader of nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s, Dr. King successfully protested the separate but equal racial discrimination in federal and state law in voting, housing, transportation, etc. ... Through his preaching, leadership, and nonviolent activism, Dr. King played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of African-Americans in the South and other areas of the nation, as well as in the creation and passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Dr. King’s teachings about equality, justice, and nonviolence were heavily influenced by the Bible and by the teachings and example of Gandhi in India. Dr. King taught these principles by example and in many eloquent speeches: I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the promised land.
