Teamwork makes the dream work! Our chapter’s Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) recently teamed up with members of Pacifica’s Pedro Point Surf Club (PPSC). Aidan, his dad, and a few of his friends did their first round of sampling and lab work last week and are now regular water testers! We’re psyched to continue working together to raise awareness of the water quality at our local beaches. #nofilter #surfrider #watertesting #keepouroceansclean #pacifica #pedropointsurfclub
Join us this Monday, MLK day, from 7-8 PM Pacific while we get up close with Maya Penn. Maya is an eco-fashion icon, an entrepreneur, an environmentalist, and a social justice activist. Maya has been doing all of this for the last 12 years and she’s 20! Yes, she was 8 when she decided to get active and make a positive change. Come listen to her fascinating story, ask her questions, and get inspired. Link in our bio for details. #mayasideas
SMC Surfrider and Menlo-Atherton Surfrider Club did a invasive species weeding and beach cleanup at Tunitas Creek today. We collected 71 pounds(!!!) of trash and 3 lbs of recycling. We also removed 3 small dunes of all the ice plant. We found a nice big spider while doing so. Aidan, Johanna, and Alissa from State Parks helped us. A great day all around! #nofilter #tunitascreekbeach #beachcleanup #surfriderfoundation #sanmateocountycoast #menloathertonhighschool

Exciting news! To celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., Surfrider San Mateo is hosting a Speakers Series starting this Monday. Volunteer Coordinator Rhonda Harper will moderate a conversation on Monday with Maya Penn of Maya’s Ideas, a fashion brand creating sustainable accessories and clothing made from organic and recycled materials. Wednesday, Rhonda will talk with Apryl Boyle, marine biologist/shark expert from El Porto Shark. Then, on Friday, Rhonda will share information on the surf schools she has started. We hope you can join us for what is sure to be an inspirational, educational week!! Head over to the Events page on our website this weekend for the zoom links for these conversations: www. smc.Surfrider.org/events
We’re sorry to announce that the beach clean-up scheduled for Saturday, January 16th has been cancelled due to the shelter-in-place order. We encourage all of you to get out to a San Mateo County beach if you can and do a clean-up on your own!
The democratic process is how we will continue to work together to reach our common goals... Please give Adriana Estrada and Dr. Chad Nelson’s statement from Surfrider National about yesterday’s event at the Capitol and how we move forward in its wake.
We are so lucky to have so many great beaches here in San Mateo county. If you have a favorite, please share it in the comments with a few words explaining why. Any of you know which beach this is? #nofilter #pacificocean #sanmateocounty #keepourbeachesclean

Surfrider San Mateo County’s own Rob Birdlegs Caughlan’s book A Surfer In The White House... is now available on Amazon. Order now. 50 years ago Rob "Birdlegs" Caughlan wrote his first article for Surfer Magazine about surfer power. 34 years ago, as the first President of the Surfrider Foundation, he helped put surfers on the map of people with importance and power on coastal issues. Two years ago he helped the Surfrider Foundation win our historic victory in the United ...States Supreme Court in our effort to maintain access to Martin's Beach. As President Emeritus he has been preaching coastal protection sermons for a long time. Birdleg's new book A Surfer In The White House: and other salty yarns is a collection of fun and exciting surfing stories, about growing up and surfing on the #SanMateoCounty coast. It also includes his experiences as a political and environmental activist. In politics he worked for Congressman Leo Ryan, Pete McCloskey, Dianne Feinstein and in the White House and the EPA for President Jimmy Carter. He collaborated with movie stars including Paul Newman and Robert Redford and William Shatner on various good deeds. Surfers and activists will enjoy some of his salty yarns. With everyone talking about the Nov. 3rd election, now is the perfect time to order Birdlegs book for a surfer's perspective in the White House. Stay tuned for a book signing announcement in the not too distant future. Surf photo credit: Don Montgomery Order on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Surfer-White-House-other//057866639

Come along with us to the shores of Dakar, Sengal as we watch professional surfer Khadjou Sambe defy traditional roles through the love of surfing in the short documentary film, emerger. Learn how local Bay Area organization, Queer Surf equips queers, women, GNC, trans, lesbian, gay, and non-binary people with tools and knowledge to safely enjoy the ocean. Although these organizations individually have their own mission and cause, they each have an important message in common; to bring diversity, equality and inclusion to the surf community. See the link in our bio to register. @blackgirlssurf @queersurf

Thank you to the Gunn High School Surfrider Club and rangers, Dave and Danielle, from the Palo Alto Baylands for helping out on Coastal Cleanup Day this past Saturday! Together we picked up 64lbs of recycling and 110lbs of trash from the Baylands. Among the usual suspects of cigarette butts and other plastics, we also found and removed two tires, a fire extinguisher, a tripod, and an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet tied to a cement block. This weekend is the last opp...ortunity to participate in Coastal Clea up Month! Do a cleanup on your own or with your family, and track what you find on the Clean Swell App to be included in state wide data. More info on solo cleanups for Coastal Cleanup Month is in our bio and available from @smchealth @paranger @thecaliforniacoast @surfrider #paranger and #paloaltoopenspace #coastalcleanupmonth #coastalcleanupday #beachcleanup #volunteer #paloalto #siliconvalley #bayarea #protectandenjoy

Surfriders and beach goers, @cityofhmb and @sanmateocounty again urge us not to congest coastside roads by not visiting the beaches this weekend thru 8/31/20. Let’s help by keeping the roads free for the authorities and firefighters battling the CZU fire. And many thanks to the restaurants providing meals to the First Responders. We’ll hit the as soon as we can. #sanmateocounty #santaclaracounty
