Toshio Saeki/Supreme Japanese artist Toshio Saeki regarded internationally as the Godfather of Japanese Erotica was born in 1945 and raised in Osaka. As a child, Saeki developed a knack for drawing and storytelling, entertaining other children with hand-made kamishibai (picture cards) and illustrations. At the Kyoto Municipal Hiyoshigaoka High School Art Program in the early 1960s, Saeki studied plaster sketching and oil painting, and made erotic shunga drawings for his... friends. In 1969, he moved to Tokyo, where he worked to develop a unique, expressive style of art-making as the city began experiencing its own social and cultural revolution. Saeki’s transgressive approach to erotica incorporated Japanese folklore and Shinto spirits, gore, mischief, violence and humor. A fan of samurai-period films and Yakuza B-movies as well as Western art and comics (particularly works by French illustrator Tomi Ungerer), Saeki’s primary influence was his own subconscious his dreams, memories and supernatural visions. Saeki’s renegade sensibility captured the spirit of his generation, who in the 1970s were shaking up long-held notions of tradition, sex and self-expression. In the first half of the decade, Saeki self-published a book of 50 drawings, mounted a solo show in Paris, and had his work featured on the cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s album Some Time in New York City, as well as in Japanese magazines like Heibon Punch, Asahi Gein and SM Select. By the 1990s, Saeki left Tokyo, and spent his later life in a rural mountain village of the Chiba Prefecture. The visions that I show people are the incomprehensible stuff of ero [erotica] and mystery, Saeki has said. If the reality hidden in my soul even if it is only the smallest fragment of it is able to evoke something in the viewer, then my intention has been achieved. Supreme began working with Saeki on a collection in 2019. He passed away at the age of 74 before the project’s completion. The collection consists of a Work Jacket, Hooded Sweatshirt and Work Pant. Joel-Peter Witkin/Supreme American artist Joel-Peter Witkin is renowned for creating imagery which disrupts conventional notions of mortality, desire and spirituality. Drawing from a wide range of sources including early photographic history and Daguerreotype techniques, religion, and painting ranging from Caravaggio and Giotto to Picasso and Balthus Witkin develops elaborate, surreal scenes that feature people often relegated to society’s margins, as well as cadavers and... dismembered limbs. Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Witkin’s dark sensibilities were formed during childhood. He witnessed a fatal car accident at a young age in which a girl was decapitated. Growing up he collected news clippings about outcasts and illnesses; as a teen in the mid-1950s, used his first camera to document Coney Island sideshow performers. In the 1960s, Witkin served as a photographer during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged he became the official photographer for City Walls, NYC; an organization that produced murals throughout the five boroughs. He studied sculpture at Cooper Union in 1974 and was granted a fellowship in poetry from Columbia University. In 1976 he moved to New Mexico, and earned a MFA in photography from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he currently lives and works. Witkin employs a variety of techniques in creating his images piercing and scratching the negatives, and experimenting with various techniques during the printing process. By centering and eroticizing deformity and the macabre, Witkin’s transgressive images challenge the viewers’ perceptions of beauty. Witkin has said his work, "reflects the insanity of life." This fall, Supreme will release a collection featuring three of Joel-Peter Witkin’s images: Mother and Child (With Retractor, Screaming), Harvest, and Sanitarium, which inspired Alexander McQueen’s iconic Asylum presentation in 2001.
