Yosemite News Release June 27, 2019 For Immediate Release Yosemite National Park Announces Tioga Road To Open to Unrestricted Vehicular Traffic on Monday, July 1... Tioga Road to remain open with limited hours through the weekend Yosemite National Park announces the Tioga Road will open to unrestricted vehicular traffic on Monday, July 1st, at 8:00 a.m.. From now until the full opening Monday morning, vehicular access will continue to be available from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will continue to be no stopping along the road and no overnight parking.. Park Rangers will sweep the road after each open and closed period to make sure visitors are utilizing the corridor only to cross the Sierra. Bicycles will be allowed during daylight hours throughout the weekend. The park implemented the limited opening the past couple of weeks to allow crews to remove snow, set up utility systems to open restrooms and facilities, and prepare for summer operations. This resulted in better protection of park resources with no day use of the area as operations were coming on line. Areas along the Tioga Road, and specifically Tuolumne Meadows, are ecologically sensitive areas and the full opening with restrooms available for visitors will mitigate many resource issues that were seen in past openings where the road was opened with no facilities available for the public. Visitor Services such as general park information and restrooms will be available beginning Monday. Other visitor services, such as campgrounds, lodging, and the store and grill, will be opened incrementally throughout the month of July. Yosemite National Park extends its gratitude to the visiting public for complying with the limited opening, and helping to protect the park's precious resources. Yosemite National Park is open year-round. All motorists should drive with caution and be aware of possible hazards in the roadway, including rocks, debris, and water. Tioga Road may be impacted by incoming storm activity, including snow and icy driving conditions, over the next several weeks. Tioga Road may temporarily close due to weather and unsafe driving conditions at any time. Tioga Road is a seasonal road through Yosemite National Park, typically open from late spring to early fall. For updated 24-hour road and weather conditions for Yosemite National Park, please call 209-372-0200. -NPS-

Yosemite National Park: Snow is cleared and Tioga Road opens Monday According to The Mercury News: By PAUL ROGERS | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: May 17, 2018 at 11:43 am | UPDATED: May 17, 2018 at 12:15 pm...... Tioga Road, the fabled route through Yosemite National Park’s scenic high country and the highest-elevation road in California’s state highway system, will re-open to vehicles Monday. The road, which closes every winter due to deep snow, and closed last Nov. 14, will open to all vehicle traffic at 9 a.m., park officials announced. The road’s opening is something of an annual rite of spring, and is an indication of how much snow the Sierra Nevada received during the winter. Last year, after record snow and rain that broke the California’s five-year drought, the Tioga Road didn’t re-open until June 29. The average opening date from 1996 to 2015 was May 26. All campgrounds along Tioga Road remain closed. Park officials said Thursday that there is no anticipated opening date for the Tuolumne Meadows store and the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center. There is no gasoline available along Tioga Road. The closest gas station is located at Crane Flat. For more information about park road conditions, motorists can call 209-372-0200 or go to https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm. One of the marquee drives in America’s national park system, the winding, two-lane Tioga Road bisects Yosemite’s alpine center, passing through meadows and forests of lodgepole pine and juniper. It runs 46 miles from Crane Flat to Tioga Pass, where it crests at 9,945 feet in the highest highway pass in California. The route for centuries was a footpath for Indians, upgraded to a mining road in 1883 during a brief silver boom, and then a private toll road that charged $2 per horse and rider. In an unusual act of philanthropy, it became public and part of the park in 1915, when San Francisco native Stephen Mather, the first director of the National Park Service, bought it for $15,000 with his own money and donations from the Sierra Club and the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. He sold it to Congress that year for $10, hoping to bring more tourists into the park. Yosemite’s other high-elevation road, the Glacier Point Road, re-opened to vehicles on April 28. Every year, crews with snow plows clear each of the two roads, facing snow drifts that can be 20 feet deep and avalanche risks. In 1995, Yosemite employee Barry Hance, 43, was killed when an avalanche on Tioga Road smashed into the snow-removal machine he was driving. In his memory, the park presents the Barry Hance Award every year to the park employee who best demonstrates a positive attitude, a concern for fellow employees, a willingness to work with other divisions in the park, getting the job done, and a love for Yosemite National Park.

National Parks Senior Pass Fee By Congress Legislation In order to meet requirements set by legislation passed by Congress in December 2016, the price of the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass will increase from $10 to $80. The change will take effect August 28, 2017. Pass holders are given lifetime access to more than 2,000 sites and parks. The fee increase will support critical investments in maintenance projects at national pa...rks and federal recreational lands nationwide. The Senior Pass has cost $10 since 1994. Until August 28, U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are 62 years or older can purchase the lifetime Senior Pass for $10. Previously purchased lifetime Golden Age or Senior Passes will be honored for the lifetime of the pass holder. The Senior Pass can be used at sites managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Funds from passes are used to enhance the visitor experience and support priority projects and programs. The pass can be purchased for $10 before August 28 at a national park or other Federal recreation area that charges an entrance or standard amenity (day use) fee. The pass can also be obtained by mail or on line, for $10 before August 28 but there will be an additional $10 charge for processing, for a total of $20. Due to expected high order volume, there could be delays with online and mail order processing of up to several months. The legislation requires that the price of the lifetime Senior Pass be the same as the Interagency Annual Pass, which is currently $80. The legislation also introduces a new annual Senior Pass that can be purchased for $20. Seniors who purchase annual Senior Passes for four years can trade them in for a lifetime Senior Pass at no additional charge. The Senior Pass covers all entrance fees and standard amenity (day use) fees and may provide senior discounts for things such as tours or campsites. The pass also waives the entrance fee for travelling companions. At per-vehicle fee sites, the pass admits the pass holder and all passengers in a noncommercial vehicle. At a per-person fee site, the pass admits the pass holder and three other adults. Children under 16 are always admitted free.

El Portal Road in Yosemite National Park Remains Closed - Yosemite News Release June 13, 2017, 1:00 p.m. Highway 140 closed at Parkline at least through the weekend The El Portal Road and Arch Rock Entrance into Yosemite National Park remain closed due to a rockslide that occurred yesterday around noon. Yosemite National Park staff are assessing the area and the road will remain closed at least through the weekend of June 17-18, 2017. After the assessment is complete, crews ...will begin to remove rock debris and repair the road to make it safe for visitors to travel on. There is no estimate for when the road will reopen. Around noon yesterday, a large rockslide occurred from the "Parkline Slab" cliff, about 1 mile east of the park boundary on Highway 140. The rockslide originated from a point mid-way up the cliff, approximately 400 feet above the base of the cliff and 600 feet above the El Portal Road. Roughly 4,000 tons of rock detached from the cliff along a cliff-parallel exfoliation joint; the approximate dimensions of the slab are 50 x 80 x 15 feet. This massive slab of rock slid down the cliff, hit a ledge, and broke into many pieces; these pieces fragmented further on hitting the base of the cliff, fanning out over an area more than 1,000 feet wide. The bulk of the debris slid and rolled down the slope at the base of the cliff, piling up on the El Portal Road, and continuing down to (and into) the Merced River. Of the total volume of material that fell, roughly 1/3 of that landed on the El Portal Road, covering an area of road about 150 feet long under up to 15-20 feet of rock debris. The largest boulder on the road is about 130 tons, and there are several other boulders that are only somewhat smaller. Boulders and smaller "flyrock" fragments covered a section of road nearly 1,000 feet long. The road sustained damage, both to the paved surface and the retaining wall. Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System (YARTS) buses will run on a modified schedule. To see the schedule, please visit www.yarts.com. A news release will be issued with updates as repairs progress on the El Portal Road. (S. Gediman)

Royal Robbins, 1935-2017 Royal Robbins, one of the pioneers of American rock climbing, passed away on March 14th. Robbins, along with Tom Frost and Chuck Pratt, made the first ascent of El Capitan’s challenging Salathè Wall route in 1961. Along with Frost, Pratt, and Yvon Chouinard, he made the first ascent of El Cap’s North America Wall in 1964. Although he made many notable climbs the world over, his path very often led him back to Yosemite Valley. Royal was born in Point P...leasant, West Virginia on February 3, 1935. He first visited the High Sierra as a Boy Scout at age 14, took naturally to rock climbing, and was hooked. He developed his skills at Tahquitz Rock in the San Jacinto Mountains southeast of Los Angeles during the mid-1950s and by 1957 at the age of 22 he had joined Mike Sherrick and Jerry Gallwas in the 5-day first ascent of the Northwest Face of Half Dome. In 1963 Royal became the first to solo a Yosemite big wall by completing the second ascent of the Grade V West Face of Leaning Tower. He completed the first solo ascent of El Capitan in 1968 with a grueling nine-day climb (and second ascent) of the Muir Wall. He married his wife Liz, whom he met while she was a hostess at the Ahwahnee in 1963, and they settled in her hometown of Modesto. In 1967, with Royal as her partner, Liz became the first woman to climb Half Dome. Together, they created a successful outdoor apparel company, featuring clothing that (to quote the Robbinses) could stand up to the harsh Yosemite granite. He wrote two highly influential climbing books, Basic Rockcraft and Advanced Rockcraft, which emphasized free climbing skills and a clean-climbing ethic. Royal also became an accomplished kayaker, completing first descents of challenging rivers from high mountain elevations. He is survived by his wife, son, Damon, and daughter, Tamara. (A. Kunz, K. Yager) Taken from the 'Yosemite Daily Report'. See more

Yosemite National Park Continues Work to Repair Big Oak Flat Road - News Release March 13, 2017 Highway 41 opened to one-lane traffic Yosemite National Park continues work to repair the Big Oak Flat Road (continuation of Highway 120 ) leading to Yosemite Valley. Severe winter storms have impacted the road and it has been unsafe for vehicular travel since late February. The park is working with Federal Highway Administration officials and contractors to completely assess the... situation and design and implement repair work. There is no estimated date for the road to reopen. Significant rain and snow this winter has saturated the soils, resulting in soils under the road sliding downhill. This movement caused a large fissure to form in the roadway that has resulted in both lanes of traffic being unsafe for vehicles. Soils continue to move, causing further damage to the roadway. Over 200 feet of roadway has been impacted. We pledge to work diligently on the repair and communicate regularly about progress that is made, stated Yosemite National Park Acting Superintendent Woody Smeck. We know this road closure places a burden on the surrounding communities and we are working as quickly as we can to get the road reopened safely. We appreciate the Federal Highway Administration’s assistance in expediting this project. We greatly appreciate the patience and support of all communities along the Highway 120 corridor. Visitors are still able to visit Yosemite National Park via the Big Oak Flat entrance. Crane Flat and the Merced and Tuolumne Groves of Giant Sequoias are accessible and open. The park has waived the entrance fee for visitors entering the park via Highway 120. Park entrance fees still apply to all visitors entering the park via the Arch Rock and South Entrance Stations. The Wawona Road (Highway 41) is currently open to one-lane controlled traffic. Highway 140 (El Portal Road) remains open and clear for all vehicular traffic Visitors traveling on this road are urged to drive with caution and be aware of rocks and debris on the road. For updated 24-hour road and weather conditions for Yosemite National Park, please call 209-372-0200, press 1 and press 1 again.
