Welcome to our newest club member Lyn "Chuck" Stowell, retired business owner! Lyn grew up in Sunnyvale, graduated from Fremont High in 1963, and used to grow and sell produce in Sunnyvale. We are happy to have you! Through regular club programs, projects, and neighborhood activities, our members learn about the issues that face our communities and exchange ideas about how to take action to respond to them. There's no limit to the good we can do together! #SunnyvaleRotary #FourWayTest #ServiceAboveSelf

Program Notes: May 12, 2020 During our Club Assembly, Marie Bernard reported on the vital work of Sunnyvale Community Services during the pandemic. The number of low-income individuals coming to SCS for financial assistance has increased six-fold since the start of the pandemic. Many new as well as returning clients have lost their jobs, and seniors sheltering in place are going hungry. ... The primary needs at SCS right now are for financial donations, grocery gift cards, Visa/Mastercard gift cards, and Amazon gift cards. The monetary donations will be used to support those low-income families in need of food and/or financial aid. Gift cards are distributed to help families in emergencies and to augment the SCS monthly food distribution and essential supplies when they run short. Donations can be made online or via check, and gift cards can be mailed or dropped off at the SCS offices: 725 Kifer Road, Sunnyvale, CA 94086. #WeAreSunnyvaleRotary #Community #SunnyvaleStrong https://svcommunityservices.org/donate-online/

Program Notes, May 5, 2020 Speakers: Darlene de la Cerna, District 5170 Rotary Youth Exchange co-chair; Julia Casanova-Moore & Madeleine McSorley, 2019-20 RYE students. Topic: Rotary Youth Exchange... Darlene reported that we had 13 outbound and 13 inbound students this year. It was an unusually challenging year because of the pandemic. Our district’s RYE program has been exchanging students for more than 25 years, and we have worked with more than 30 countries. Julia was sponsored by the San Jose Rotary Club and lived with a family in Logroño, Spain. She was actively engaged with the local Rotary club, attending meetings and participating in service projects. She traveled extensively with her host family. The biggest challenge was adapting to Spanish schools. Julia said both her Spanish language skills and cultural appreciation increased. She thought she grew a lot by dealing with unanticipated circumstances. Madeleine was sponsored by the Cupertino Rotary Club and lived with families in Léon, France. The local Rotary club was not as involved in her experience as was Julia’s. Madeleine also found the schools challenging; school days ran from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, with Wednesdays off. She enjoyed ski trips. Shane showed recent pictures from his host family when he was a Rotary Exchange student in France, with whom he maintains regular contact. In response to a question, Julia said that she made friendships that she expects to maintain.
