About Christopher: Over the last fifteen years, Mr. Sunnen has worked to protect his client’s rights both in and out of the courtroom and provides solutions to many challenging cases at a high level of professionalism. He specializes in both Family Law/Divorce and Bankruptcy Law. Mr. Sunnen is a member of the California State Bar and has been in private practice for over fifteen years, focusing on litigation in family court, federal court, tax court, bankruptcy court, and before various administrative agencies. Prior to his time in private practice, Mr. Sunnen was a clerk for Federal Magistrate David Noce in the Eighth Circuit. Mr. Sunnen graduated from law school at Washington University in St. Louis, where he was awarded Best Brief in Moot Court and was a three-year member of the Dean’s List, recognizing academic excellence. Prior to his career as an attorney, Mr. Sunnen attended Washington University in St. Louis, where he graduated with a double major in Political Science and History and wrote an honors thesis. As a former Park Ranger, Mr. Sunnen has been, and is active in both the private and public sectors of the outdoor industry and has worked with many Fortune 500 companies to promote sustainable public lands appreciation, education and protection. Mr. Sunnen is also the former head of a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that he founded and operated for a three-year period; and currently serves on the board of directors of another 501(c)(3) organization. Mr. Sunnen is active in the local legal community, mentors’ young lawyers, and aspiring lawyers. When not at the office, Mr. Sunnen can be found traveling, climbing mountains, or generally, adventuring anywhere outside. In each case, he brings real world experience to bear to resolve and de-escalate high conflict matters for the benefit of the firm’s clients.

Since the Family Law Divisions of the San Diego Superior Court have re-opened in May 2020, all hearings have been virtual through the MS Teams application, which has a conference call component; and a virtual meeting component. When using MS Teams, the best tip is the also the most basic tip: use your "mute" button. Over the last months, we've heard comments, stories, barking dogs, and everything in between from attorneys and pro per litigants alike. Be smart; litigate wisely; and mute yourself when you're not being addressed by the court. #familylaw #sandiego #COVID19

#ThrowbackThursday: Over the last weeks, we've been seeing a lot of old (5+ yr.) judgments and orders with the phrase "Reasonable Visitation". No dates; no times; just this verbiage. While we can appreciate that no one wants to rock the boat, and everyone wants a deal and to co-parent, specificity over the short and long term is your friend. Unfortunately, #FamilyLaw is littered with examples of parties who were *reasonable* only to change over time. Normally on Fridays, our firm tries to provide blanket assistance to everyone as a public service. Today, we’d like to take a moment to go off brand and ask for your assistance to effectuate positive change in the name of justice. It may sound strange to talk about justice in these troubled times; especially when so many public examples of injustice are present. But yet, we know from experience that justice is present even if one has to walk for it, talk for it, advocate f...or it, and fight for it. As Nelson Mandela stated: I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended. Over the last week, we have watched Americans take hold of their freedom responsibilities and start many long walks. There is nothing more inspirational than all of us first, taking hold of our rights and using them this is what makes our country strong our commitment to our rights and our use of them; and second our united ability to effectuate change. Many examples of what it is to be American have been given in the last week, but none is more important than our ability to further the cause of justice because that is a cause that predated what it is in fact to be American. It is a cause that calls for no further lingering, and still much walking which we fundamentally know all of us can do together. As a business, we have always tried to lead from the front in helping our community and we intend to do so now. As such, we’ve donated $250.00 each to two local causes, and we’d like to encourage and challenge local businesses and individuals to do the same. First, to the DeDe McClure Community Bail Fund to help local organizers and activists among others to continue the local fight for justice; and second, to Family Health Centers of San Diego (https://www.fhcsd.org/ways-to-help-covid-19-response/) to to aid local minority communities which have been, and are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. If you can’t donate, which is fine, we’d also like to encourage everyone to keep walking; keep peacefully protesting; and keep educating each other to effectuate change for justice. As always, we will also be working for all of you, and be ready to support you when the times call for it. THE COURT WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR: -Chamber ex-parte requests for civil harassment TROs, DVTROs, and Gun Violence Protective Orders at each branch. -Emergency ex-parte lockout proceedings (UD). -One Family law judge at each branch will review ex-parte requests for emergency TROs, Guardianship requests where a minor’s safety is at risk.... -One Juvenile judge will be available for emergency orders and Dependency detentions. -One Probate judge will be available to cover emergency conservatorship and other emergency orders in Probate. -All search warrants (day and night) will be electronically submitted.
