Regram: @wilson_university Bishop Garfield Thomas Haywood was a revered bible teacher, apologist, and hymn writer. He received the baptism of the Holy Ghost in 1908. Only one year after his conversion, he began holding meetings in an empty storeroom in downtown Indianapolis. Hundreds of people were filled with the Holy Ghost In 1916, G.T. Haywood and 465 members of his church were baptized in Jesus’ Name, marking the first recorded apostolic baptisms east of the Mississipp...i River. The Voice in the Wilderness, a circular printed by Haywood’s church, became one of the most influential publications of the apostolic movement. In 1924, G.T. Haywood founded Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church in Indianapolis, IN. It was a center of apostolic revival and was seminal in the establishment of other oneness Pentecostal churches and ministries throughout Indiana and the entire Midwest. Christ Temple epitomized many of the original values of the earliest years of Pentecostal revival. The congregation was thoroughly integrated with people of different races joyfully worshipping together. G.T. Haywood became the first presiding bishop of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) in 1925. He was a man of deep prayer and among Apostolics, he did more to cement the importance of profound biblical teaching. In addition, he penned some of the greatest hymns of the twentieth century. Bishop Haywood pastored Christ Temple until his death in April of 1931. It is impossible to estimate the number of churches, pastors, bishops, evangelists, and missionaries birthed out of Christ Temple. Bishop Haywood and the faithful saints of Christ Temple have secured their place in apostolic history. The church continues today as the oldest apostolic church in Indiana and as a remarkable piece of treasured Pentecostal heritage.
