Throwback Thursday: Sulphur Creek's annual Unhaunted House & Carnival is our largest event and we are so disappointed that this year’s event has been cancelled. Each year the park and discovery center are transformed into a Halloween spooktacular! We still want to embrace the Halloween spirit so if you have joined us in the past for the Unhaunted House & Carnival, please share a picture and tell us what you enjoyed the most! Here are a few of our favorite pictures from years past. Hayward Area Recreation & Park District Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center City of Hayward - Government

Acts of Kindness Malcolm, the Desert Tortoise, has made many friends over the past 34 years at Sulphur Creek. He is always a favorite in programs, receives more love letters than any person we know, has a friend named Olen who cuts grass for his meals, and he has a few people that bring rose petals for him to chomp on every so often. Today Malcolm was gifted with his very own dandelion garden. Some folks see these leafy plants as weeds, but Malcolm sees and smells them as a special treat. Thank you Jennifer. @City of Hayward @Hayward Area Recreation and Park District @Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center

Fall is Here! We have had a long hot summer and now the animals are preparing for winter. The Oak trees have been bursting with acorns and the wildlife at Sulphur Creek are beginning to stock up for a long (hopefully) wet winter while the Great-horned Owls begin to call out for a mate. What are the animals in your neighborhood doing? #HaywardRec #SCNC #First Day of Fall #Haywardca

Sulphur Creek Update: We are still closed to the public at this time. We will let you know as soon as something changes. The animal care team is still working hard to care for all of the animals. The education department is working on virtual animal presentations for schools and groups. For now, we are offering virtual toddler times and nature classes with Miss Christine. https://apm.activecommunities.com/haywardr/Activity_Search... Remembering Reggie A sad day has come to pass at Sulphur Creek Nature Center with the loss of Reggie, our Heritage Breed Turkey. He lived an amazing 8 years, which in turkey years is definitely considered an "old timer." He came to the center in 2014 as an adorable youngster and was immediately loved by everyone. He liked to put on a show with his feathers, fanning them for all to see while doing the turkey strut, which is a slow moving walk while making his drumming soun...d. This amazing display would win any female turkey’s heart! Our nature programs flourished around him and children loved to just sit outside of the barnyard to see such a large turkey up close. Fans giggled with delight to see him gobble up a handful of mealworms that were his special treat. H.A.R.D. and the Nature Center will miss him. @HaywardRec #Turkey @SulphurCreekNatureCenter See more

Celebrating National Lazy Day We miss all our friends and look forward to that special day when we can see you all again. But in the meantime, here is a little peak into Sulphur Creek as the animals celebrate National Lazy Day by taking a break to soak up the sun and embrace a day of lazing. Sulphur Creek misses all of our human guests, but we have lots of wildlife stopping by to visit. Take a moment to listen to the many sounds in our park. We are still unsure of when we will open to the public but we will let you know as soon as possible!
