Judge Beverley Reid O'Connell was a key partner in the initial trainings with the Ugandan Judiciary on plea bargaining. She unexpectedly passed away in 2017, but we are forever grateful for the investment she made in this project. The fruits of her efforts are now being realized in ways we could not have imagined. But what if someone was wrongly accused of poaching and spent years of their life in prison for a crime they didn’t commit simply because they couldn't afford a lawyer to defend themself? Unfortunately it's all too common in developing countries for accused persons to remain in custody for years before receiving access to a lawyer or a trial date. As an innocent man held in prison without a trial for four years, Stephen was desperate for his day in court. After inquiring with the local judge, we were surprised to find out that his trial was scheduled to happen soon and one of our Ugandan colleagues agreed to represent him. When we began the plea bargaining initiative with the Ugandan Government several years ago, it was common to find inmates who had been stuck in pretrial detention anywhere between 5-7 years. Today ...that number is closer to 1-3 years. It's still far too long to wait for justice, but we are deeply encouraged by the progress. #justice #humanrights #globaljustice #pepperdinelaw
