Once upon a time - I traded 8s on stage with Issam Houshan. I remember being so NERVOUS - and I can't watch this video without thinking I look terrified ((thoug...h trying very hard to look cool)). I had a blast playing zills with Issam and all the dancers at BDSS - what an honor. I'll be conintuing my License to Zill series - every Monday in August - and it isn't too late to join us! Register www.DanceGardenLA.com - the class is pay-what-you-can and comes with a handy dandy handout :)

Musician: Faisal Zedan So much fun to collaborate with my good friend Faisal Zedan on this drum solo! He knows I like funky rhythms so there are some time signa...ture changes throughout the drum solo - do you hear it?! Faisal is a master percussionist born in Beirut, Lebanon, and raised in Oum Dbaib, Syria, whose great love for drumming and years of practice has resulted in a mastery of Arabic percussion instruments, including the ones shown in this video: derbekki, riqq, tar, and dohola. Like many of my friends I'm collaborating with on this project, we met through the Bay Area Balkan and Middle Eastern music scenes and have spent a lot of time together at shows, parties, camps, and rehearsals. And it's always a pleasure being in Faisal's presence and getting to dance with him. He's just the best. Faisal drove me to Middle Eastern Music and Dance Camp my very first year going as a camper (he teaches regularly at camp) and we enjoyed a drive listening to tarab music, comparing music to nature and geometry, talking about different styles of music and dance - I felt like a sponge soaking up all of the beautiful knowledge he was willing to share. He's so extremely generous in this way, and knowledgeable about so many different styles and genres. From classical Muwashahat, to folkloric traditions, belly dance, he is also fluent in Turkish, Armenian, Persian, Balkan, and Greek percussion styles. The world wouldn't be the same place without Faisal and I'm so fortunate to have him as a friend and somebody to learn from in this life. Thank you Faisal! Check out Faisal and all he has to offer on FB: https://www.facebook.com/faisalzedan/ and IG: @faisalzdn And please excuse the lag that happens in some of these videos - the sound and dance doesn’t always sync up!
