Undocumented Student Action Week (USAW)October 19-23, 2020is a system-wide campaign to highlight the importance of supporting undocumented students at California Community Colleges. During the week, the Student Senate is committed to advocating for legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship and permanent protections from deportation for undocumented students. This year, the action week partners will focus our USAW 2020 efforts on highlighting the need for increased access to financial support for undocumented students. The Student Senate for California Community Colleges’ (SSCCC) Board of Directors took a stance of support on what was then Assembly Constitutional Amendment No. 5 (ACA-5). ACA 5 has since passed the state Assembly (60-14) and the state Senate (30-10) and will appear on the November 3, 2020 general election ballot as Proposition 16, asking California voters to repeal the 1996 Proposition 209 which banned the use of affirmative action in state hiring, contracting, and education.... On Saturday, October 3rd at 11:00 AM, the SSCCC will be hosting a webinar, CCC Students for Prop 16! to explain the ballot measure, the impact on the California Community Colleges, and host a panel with current and former CCC students on the need for affirmative action policies in California. Hello Students and Interested Parties, In the recent town hall meetings held by the SSCCC, students shared their stories about their experiences with microaggressions, racism, and other racial barriers to their success. The Pathways to Equity Conference below is an opportunity for students to interact with a diverse community of college practitioners as they engage in conversations about the implementation of the Guided Pathways framework with an equity lens. These conversations will focus on embedding anti-racist strategies in the community college equity work. We highly encourage students to be at the table and attend this event. Register now-it’s free!! Let’s share our stories with those who are responsible for creating the campus and classroom environments.

Dear Students and Interested Parties, SACRAMENTO, Calif. Today, we observe 100 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, prohibiting the federal government and states from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of sex.... The Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) acknowledges the nearly 100-year movement that led up to the amendment’s ratification. While a big step forward, we recognize that history repeatedly tells us a single story that excludes the racism, sexism, and classism within the movement that discriminated against suffragists of color. Within the battle for the right to vote, countless Black, Native, Asian, and Latinx suffragists were ostracized by those they worked alongside in a movement themed around equality. A century later, our nation is still challenged with barriers to the ballot box. The state of California understands the public health concerns of COVID-19 and is providing all Californians eligible to vote in this November 3, 2020, election with a vote-by-mail ballot in early October. The SSCCC continues to pursue the best interests of California community college students and has initiated a multistep get-out-the-vote campaign in association with our stances of strong support for civil rights issues including Propositions 16, 17, and 18. To register to vote in California or check your voter registration status, please visit registertovote.ca.gov.
Hello Students and Interested Parties, The SSCCC Board of Directors has voted to support Prop 16. In supporting this proposition, we are preparing a toolkit for student body associations to help to also support this proposition. While these toolkits are under development, we would like to share with you an opportunity to support the proposition and make money. The Coalition Organizer, Opportunity for All Coalition has created a Prop 16 Equal Opportunity Fellows position ...which will be a 10-week long, paid fellowship program with an expectation of approximately 100 hours as a part of the program. The program's primary purpose will be to help turn out students to vote for Prop 16 this November. We encourage you to consider this fellowship. To apply for the fellowship, fill out the application online at: https://tinyurl.com/yxawqpd6 If you have any questions, please email [email protected]
