This sermon from Sunday, Oct 11th, retells the Parable of the Wedding Banquet (Matthew 22:1-14) from the position that it is a description of the violence of worldly regimes. Jesus is represented by the silent man who does not wear the appropriate attire. He sacrifices himself for our violence and allows himself to be thrown into outer darkness through his crucifixion. He will host another kind of banquet, an eschatological banquet as envisioned by the prophet Isaiah, for those who follow him to the places of pain to announce peace.

By author and Benedictine Sister of Erie, Pennsylvania, Joan Chittister, who writes: "There is a very poignant moment in Scripture that gets little exegesis, it seems, but it touches the deepest nerve of a people in mourning for the loss of the character of their nation. Like our own. It is the picture in Luke 19 of Jesus weeping over Jerusalem the city on the hill that was the heart and soul of the nation." ...

This sermon from Oct 4th explores the Parable of the Wicked Tenants in the context of Jesus' confrontations with religious authorities. He is trying to get them to reveal that in their hearts, they too are full of violence. If we are to engage with this parable, we, too, can stand in the position of the authorities--especially if we see ourselves as good and moral people. We let the parable be a mirror to ourselves of who we are and what we wish not to be. Who we are is beloved; who we wish not to be is a slave to violence. Jesus offers us forgiveness and we take it up when we confess and repent (change our minds).
