PrayingTogether @ St. Paul's means deepening relationships while physically distant. We decided to take our weekly appointed readings and selected music online. Pray this Online Service here, together. Videos and bulletins (to follow the service) will be posted every Saturday by 4pm. To learn more, go to www.stpaulsburlingame.org. The opening hymn, Down in the river to pray, is arranged by David L. Mennicke, Director of Choral Studies at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota since 1989. This recording is from the Choir School Concert on March 7, 2020 which highlighted music in films, this spiritual made famous by the 2000 Coen brothers movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? At the anthem, a quartet from the Choir of St. Paul’s sings the spiritual Take me to the water in an arrangement by Alice Parker (b. 1925), with countertenor soloist Joey Blundell, a Choir School alumni. An October 2020 documentary, At Home with Alice Parker, is a wonderful glimpse into the life’s work of this legendary New England composer, conductor and teacher: https://youtu.be/lxo9vuuOIcE. Alice Parker has composed hundreds of original works including operas, choral suites, song cycles, cantatas, anthems and hymns and nearly 200 arrangements of folksongs, hymns and spirituals with the American conductor Robert Shaw (1916-1999). The service closes with Minuets for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) played by Haruka Ota, an 11-year old Chorister in the St. Paul’s Choir School.
