Statement on Recent Act of Violence: From Lorrain Taylor, Founder- CEO, 1000 Mothers to Prevent Violence "Helping to Heal" As we prepare for our 10th PURPLE (P...rayer Unity Restoration Peace Love Empowerment) Gala in the City of Oakland, I cannot help but to mourn with those who mourn the loss of their loved ones to such a hateful act of violence at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburg. My first thought was to pray and to send words of encouragement to the grieving families; to let them know that my arms are open to you even from Dublin, CA. I understand what you are going through. In the year 2000, I lost both 22-year old twin sons (Obadiah and Albade) to senseless violence while they were working on a car in the City of Oakland: Both of them? I have heard that question a thousand times. Yes, my beloved twin sons came into this world together and together they departed this life during their quest for education and success. Since losing my twin sons more than 1,000 in the City of Oakland alone can relate to such tragedy. Unfortunately, millions throughout this nation continue to struggle with grief related symptoms: denial, anger, bitterness, unforgiveness and sometimes, acceptance. While there are many models to the stages of grief; the upward turn can take decades; finding a place in your heart to forgive the perpetrator can also be challenging. Of course, it may be easy for some to say; forgive and move on; but the fact is, it takes time; depending on many variables. Just know that it is OK if you are not OK on your journey towards healing. Do not let anyone dictate to you how you should feel or behave. Take time to grieve the way you need to grieve; find a strong support system and remember to take care of yourself. Grief left untreated is crippling. So, please do not suffer in silence. Don’t wait do it today; reach within for strength to reach out to professional grief counselors. Like a rose, a grieving heart is so fragile; even the slightest touch can bruise it. To those who are well-meaning; be careful how you respond to victim-survivors. It is better to remain silent and assure the survivor you are simply present to help if needed. Your presence matter more than your words. Listen for the immediate need; let your words be few. On behalf of 1000 Mothers to Prevent Violence, our prayers and thoughts are with you; we are just one telephone call away. Just know you are loved by millions! Call me if you need to talk anytime @ 510-581-0100.
