This Black History Month, we pay tribute to Howard P. Grant, a man of many firsts. Born in 1925, Grant became the first black graduate of the University of California, Berkeley College of Engineering. He went on to become the first black engineer for the City and County of San Francisco, where he addressed water engineering issues, and the first recorded black member of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1948. He was the second black civil engineer to be licensed by t...he state of California. (That’s three firsts and one second, if you’re counting.) In 1970, he hosted the first meeting of Northern California's black engineers at his home. This group would evolve into today’s 300-member Northern California Council of Black Professional Engineers. Howard P.
