I read this article in an email from Custom Craftworks and found it interesting. It was originally written by Steve Jurch, A.T.C., L.M.T., who has over 20 years’ experience as a massage therapist and athletic trainer. He serves as director of health and human services at Community College of Baltimore County, in Maryland. An NCBTMB-approved continuing education provider, he is the author of a clinical massage therapy textbook and is on the Editorial Review Operational Committ...Continue reading

The best way to decide if a massage therapist is a good fit for you is to make an appointment to try their service and, afterwards, ask yourself these questions: 1) Did they ask for information about your physical concerns? 2) Did they listen to your answers and ask follow up questions?... 3) Did they ask for feedback while they were treating you? 4) Did they adjust to your level of comfort? 5) Did they suggest other possible solutions for your problems, like acupuncture or nutrition and offer a referral ? 6) Did you feel that your health and comfort were important to them? 7) In short, did you feel that they valued your health and comfort more than your business? Massage is a very personal service and all massage therapists should consider the client first, in my opinion...

Pregnancy Massage Massage for the expectant mother is extremely beneficial, for both her and the anticipated baby. Women who are pregnant have many not - so - comfortable effects resulting from this wonderful condition. Backaches are very common, as are swollen ankles, sore muscles, leg cramps, poor circulation, and fatigue on the physical level. Lymph drainage can help to eliminate toxins from the body. Trigger point therapy can help to relieve sciatic pain. Beyond that, ...a gentle massage can help to bring about calmness and relaxation for the infant and the prospective mother throughout this exciting, anxious and challenging period of time. As labor gets closer, these treatments will help to bring about a positive reaction to the birthing process. The massage is performed with the client lying on her side, with a body pillow to support her upper leg and arm and a pillow under her neck. This is very comfortable and does not require her to lie face down. Basically, I check the back for particular areas of stiffness and then I usually perform a gluteal release using trigger points, which help to relieve any back pain. Next, I massage the back, arm, hand, leg and foot available to me. Then the client turns onto her other side and I repeat the process. Next, she lays on her back and I work on her neck and head. If you are pregnant and would like my help, please give me a call. I’m here for you. And, if you know someone who could use my services, please share. I would appreciate it and so might they. Wisely, my daughter - in - law, Elisa, has been having regular massages throughout her pregnancies and here is what she has to say about it. --- Before having my first prenatal massage, I had my reservations. I didn't know what to expect and my concerns ranged from safety to cost to benefits. Was it safe for my baby and me? How would it differ from a regular massage? Would it be helpful for my condition or just simply relaxing? Would they have a special table to fit my belly? Once I had my first prenatal massage, I realized how beneficial and important the treatments were for pregnant moms. My questions about safety were answered by my therapist who talked me through the process and informed me as to what to expect. Each prenatal massage I've had has been focused on the specific time in my pregnancy and how far along I was. I found prenatal massage to be as therapeutic, if not more so, than a traditional massage. Prenatal massage has become a regular part of my pregnancy, something I look forward to as both a treat and a stress and pain release, and something I recommend to my pregnant friends and family. ---

Here’s a post I just copied from Dr. Andrew Weil’s Daily Tip Post - this man knows what he is talking about!! Feeling Stressed Out? Learn How A Massage May Help Here’s a healthy goal with the added bonus of feeling luxurious: get a monthly massage. Receiving a professional massage is relaxing and has numerous health benefits: It can help manage stress levels, reduce blood pressure and heart rate, ease sore muscles and stiff joints, lower levels of stress hormones, and enhance... immune function. Massage is a touch therapy that I highly recommend. It can be relaxing and therapeutic for many health conditions including back issues, muscle strains or osteoarthritis. The healing touch of massage can also boost levels of endorphins and serotonin the body’s natural painkillers and mood regulators and increase blood circulation. Those with anxiety, depression or eating disorders can take advantage of the effects massage has on the mind massage has proven effective for reducing pain, anxiety, stress, and depression in patients with a wide range of medical problems. Many forms of massage therapy are available, and it always pays to ask a massage therapist what types of therapy he or she has studied. One that I like is trigger-point therapy (also known as neuromuscular therapy). This technique applies concentrated pressure to so-called trigger points, which are areas of chronic contraction in the muscle that may feel like lumps or knots. They are often painful and can sometimes lead to pain in other parts of the body. Trigger-point therapy applies sufficient pressure to these areas to relax the muscles, and it stretches the surrounding tissue known as fascia to help prevent recurrence. See more

"The skin is our largest sensory interface with the world. We can close our eyes or plug our ears to imagine losing sight or hearing, but it's hard to imagine losing the ability to feel. It's thought to be the first sense that we develop while in the womb." Quoted from AARP magazine December/January issue. We all need healing touch - make an appointment! I look forward to working with you.

I like to think of the lymphatic system as similar in appearance and behavior to the waterways of the world. This body system lies on top of the muscles and runs over the entire area, from the top of the head to the bottom of the foot. It consists of lymph vessels which transport the lymphatic fluid to the lymph nodes. The purpose is to keep the body healthy and supplied with clean fluid, just like the water of the world provides us with the necessary fluid that everything in... this world needs. The lymphatic system, similar to our rivers and streams and oceans, collects the trash. When this trash is too big or not able to be dissolved by the blood system, it collects in the lymph nodes which are located primarily in the throat, the armpits, the inguinal areas, and behind the knees and the ankles. These are the lumps you feel when you have had an illness - or have recently avoided one - or surgery, or an accident, which may have blocked the usual paths by scar tissue. They are what I consider to be areas of possible log jams and they cause edema or swelling which is from blocked lymphatic fluid. This can be released when the nodes are encouraged to chew up and release the toxins into the blood stream with eventual release into the urinary system. Just as our world’s water needs to be cleaned up and protected for our health, so does our lymphatic system. The treatment for edema and swollen lymph nodes, known as Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, helps to break down the garbage very gently so it can be received by the blood stream. To continue the simile of the waterways, think of the rowing teams who scull through the water - the oars just skim the surface and create a flow which moves the boat more quickly. LDT works the same way on the body and is extremely gentle and very effective.
