Tomorrow is Old Mission Santa Barbara’s drive-in fundraiser celebrating 200 years of the Mission Church! Below are a few ways you can join in on the celebration! Participate in the online silent auction! Bidding opens today at noon and runs through Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Items include Behind-the-Scenes Tours, Limited Edition Metal Prints of the 200th Celebration Poster, a Round of Golf with a Friar, and a private four-course Italian dinner at the Mission! Dear Freiend and Parishioners, This weekend, we are aware of the excessive heat warning issued by the National Weather Service for Santa Barbara County, and will be planning the liturgy accordingly. If you wish to attend the outdoor Mass this Saturday, September 5 at 4:00 p.m. or Sunday, September 6 at 11:00 a.m., please be aware of the excessive heat warning and take extra precautions to keep yourself safe:... Bring water it is very important to stay hydrated in excessive heat Wear light, cool, loose clothing Wear a hat Bring an umbrella for shade As always, face masks are required for anyone over the age of 2, and 6-foot social distancing will be enforced. Please also bring a folding chair. If you have underlying health conditions or are sensitive to excessive heat, it is recommended that you do not attend outdoor Masses this weekend, and instead join us on YouTube for the live stream Mass from Serra Chapel at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. We’re happy to share the video of the fourth session in Old Mission Santa Barbara’s speaker series, Exploring the History of Race in California! In this presentation, Dr. Lily Anne Welty Tamai explores the beginning of Asian American Communities in California in the late 19th and early 20th century. The experiences of Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino immigrants echoed one another due to the limitations in labor available to them, anti-Asian legislation, and the spaces they occupied in California’s racialized landscape. In this presentation, Dr. Miroslava Chavez-Garcia examines a murder and a controversy over Mexican-Indian relations in Mexican California in the 1840s. At the heart of the story is the relationship between two women, as well as the larger questions it raises about the meanings of gender, racial power relations and legal justice in Mexican California.
